VISIONAIRE NO. 12: DESIRE (FALL 1994) - DISPLAY COPY
(VISIONAIRE). Gan, Stephen, James Kaliardos & Cecilia Dean, Editors. New York: Visionaire Publishing, 1994. First Edition 1/2000. 4to. Loose Plates in a Portfolio. Fashion Quarterly. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. Individual illustrated sheets laid into a debossed silk-over-boards portfolio, profusely illustrated. Designed by Gregory Foley. Published in an edition of two thousand copies, this is the twelfth installment of everyone's favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "This was our collaboration with Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, and an opportunity to support a cause very close to Visionaire. Anneliese Estrada, DIFFA's creative director and our friend, came to us to raise awareness and money through art. The art dealer Paul Morris helped us gather all the original artwork printed in the issue, which was then exhibited at Charles Cowles Gallery and auctioned, with all of the proceeds benefiting DIFFA's charitable programs. The issue came in a red-satin case with bone latches, modeled after Chinese brocade jewelry boxes. These were made by hand in China, and the work took forever. The fabric refused to adhere to the boards due to, the factory wrote us, ''the humidity caused by the monsoon.'' Each edition opens with an actual print of a three-dimensional photograph of Shalom Harlow shot by Stephane Sednaoui. Sixty more artists contributed their own sexy and suggestive imagery". The stellar contributors to this issue include editor Stephen Gan, Bill Cunningham, Steven Meisel, Bruce Weber, Ruben Toledo, Francois Berthoud, Mats Gustafson, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, David Seidner, Todd Oldham, Enrique Badulescu, Ruven Afanador, Martin Margiela, Pamela Hanson, Peter Robotham, Barbara Kruger, Nobuyoshi Araki, Nan Goldin, Ross Bleckner, David Armstrong, Jack Pierson, Steven Klein, Karen Kilimnik, Jim Hodges, Zoe Leonard, Kay Rosen, Lisa Yuskavage, Bill Jacobson, Mark Morrisroe, Bjork, and many, many more. A most handsome unnumbered hors commerce example of this uncommon issue stamped "Display Copy" by the publisher on the inside front board. It has been priced accordingly.
