GORDON MATTA-CLARK: BREATHING APPARATUS FOR "FRESH AIR CART"
(MATTA-CLARK, GORDON). Matta-Clark, Gordon. Chicago: Museum of Contemporary Art, 1985. Edition Not Stated - Presumed First. 12mo. Plastic Respirator Mask. Artist's Multiple. As New. Produced in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago's landmark 1985 Gordon Matta-Clark retrospective, this is the plastic breathing apparatus that allowed viewer participation as part of the exhibition's installation of the late artist's 1972 performance piece entitled "Fresh Air Cart". "The Fresh Air Cart, a small vehicle on four wheels equipped with two seats and a tank of "pure" air (79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen) was Matta-Clark’s statement against air pollution. He set it up in 1972 during a performance in New York’s Wall Street District, and let passers-by breathe clean air through masks". A brand new, unused example of this uncommon ephemeral object still in its original clear ziploc pouch bearing the MCA's printed labels accompanied by a photocopied description of the piece taken from the artist's catalogue raisonné, a "Splitting" postcard issued for the exhibition, and a Museum guest pass.
