GERALD LAING: PAPER PLATE MULTIPLE - ARCHIVALLY FRAMED IN A PLEXIGLAS BOX
(LAING, GERALD). Laing, Gerald. New York. ND (circa 1968).: On First (Gerald Laing & Bert Stern). First Edition. 4to. Printed Paper Plate in a Box. Artist's Multiple. Fine.. One 10 ¼" diameter paper plate screenprinted with lavender ink on white. This is one of four striking paper plate designs conceived by noted British Pop Artist Gerald Laing for the groovy late sixties New York boutique, On First. Located on First Avenue at 61st in Manhattan, the shop was the brainchild of noted fashion and advertising photographer Bert Stern who opened it with the idea of commissioning stylish-yet-inexpensive objects for the home and wardrobe from artists and fashion designers. The store was ultimately short-lived - closing its doors after little more than a year - leaving most of these plates neither distributed, nor seen again. A most handsome example of the lavender biomorphic circle variant of this exceedingly uncommon ephemeral multiple (entry 68 in Lyndsey Ingram and Rupert Halliwell's "Gerald Laing: Prints & Multiples - A Catalogue RaisonnĂ©") beautifully presented in a 12 x 12 x 4" archival Artservices sixties-style Plexiglas display box / frame that can be hung on a wall or laid flat on a table.
