CINEMA MAGAZINE: A SIGNIFICANT GROUP OF TWENTY-EIGHT ISSUES
(CINEMA). Silke, James R., Curtis Lee Hanson, Grace Nagata, Rod Dyer, Michael Lindsay, Paul Schrader, Jeannine Oppewall, Arlene Friedman & Sandy Brown Wyeth, Editors. Hollywood & Beverly Hills, CA. 1963-1976: Cinema Magazine & Spectator International, Inc.. First Editions. 4to. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers. Film Journal. Near Fine. or Better. circa 60pp each, profusely illustrated in b&w + color covers. This is a group of twenty-eight of the thirty-five issues published of the stylishly designed, copiously illustrated "Cinema" magazine. Published between 1963 and 1976, it was the slightly more glamorous Tinseltown cousin to Jonas Mekas' "Film Culture" that was likewise devoted to critical insight of contemporary world cinema as well as its historical precedents. During its decade and a half run, the "Cinema" editorial staff included noted art director, illustrator, and screenwriter Jim Silke, directors Curtis Lee Hanson and Paul Schrader, and a stellar roster of contributors coupled with a notable penchant for photographing the most alluring actresses of the day. The latter was likely due to the influence of longtime publisher Jack Martin Hanson, who along with his wife Sally owned JAX - Beverly Hills' hippest women's clothing boutique - and "The Daisy" - the members-only discotheque of choice for Hollywood's beautiful people and power brokers alike. Advertisements for both establishments are prominently placed in each issue. In addition to reviews of virtually all of the significant cinematic offerings of the time, the magazine features contributions by Silke, Hanson, Schrader, Curtis Harrington, Peter Bogdanovich, Guy Webster, William Claxton, Peggy Moffitt, Richard Brooks, Raymond Durgnat, Harlan Ellison, John Sladek, Robert Towne, John Milius, Axel Madsen, James Baldwin, Paul Schrader, Tom Baker, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Donald Richie, Peter Guber, Lindsay Anderson, Roberto Rossellini, Marc Wanamaker; interviews with Howard Hawks, Fred Zinneman, Norman Jewison, Vicente Minnelli, Martin Ransohoff, Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom, Richard Attenborough, William Wyler, Lawrence Turman, Don Siegel, John Cassavetes, Saul Bass, Eddie Constantine, Gordon Parks, Toshiro Mifune, Roman Polanski, Federico Fellini, Jeanne Moreau, Arthur Penn, Henri-Georges Clouzot, Jean Renoir, Frederick Weisman, Kon Ichikawa, Eric Rohmer, Joseph H. Lewis, Woody Allen, Mitchell Leisen, Paul Morrissey, Dorothy Arzner, Costa Gavras, Curtis Harrington, Lina Wertmuller; and features on Andy Warhol, G.W. Pabst, Robert Rossen, Boris Karloff, The Hollywood Pinup, Yasujiro Ozu, Budd Boetticher, Nicholas Roeg's "Performance", Kenji Mizoguchi, Robert Bresson, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, D.W. Griffith and Carol Dempster, Elia Kazan, Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange", Chris Marker's "La Jetee", Women in Film, and many, many more. A well-preserved, most handsome run (Vol I #s 1,2 + 6 / Vol II #s 1,3, 5 + 6 / Vol III #s 1,2, 5 + 6 / Vol IV #s 1,2, 3 + 4 / Vol V #s 1,2, 3 + 4 / Vol VI #s 1,2 + 3 / Vol VII #s 1,2 + 3 / Vol VIII # 1 + issues 34 and 35) of this uncommon publication with virtually all in at least Near Fine condition showing just the occasional bit of wear, soiling, rubbing, or creasing.
