PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS BY JAMES A. PORTER
(PORTER, JAMES A.). Breeskin, Adelyn D.. Washington, D.C.: The Barnett Aden Gallery, 1948. Edition Not Stated - Presumed First. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Exhibition Brochure. Fine.. One 9 x 12" sheet printed offset recto and verso, machine folded in half vertically to make 4pp, one monochrome cover illustration. With an exhibition checklist. This is the slender four page brochure published in conjunction with a February 1948 exhibition of twenty-six works by Howard University's noted African-American art historian, artist, and educator James A. Porter held at Washington D.C.'s pioneering Barnett Aden Gallery - the first successful Black-owned private art gallery in the United States. In addition to a complete checklist, it includes a brief essay on Porter by the then director of The Baltimore Museum of Art, Adelyn D. Breeskin. A bright, most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon - only a single copy is currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - ephemeral item that was the only printed documentation of the event.
