"February 2005 marked the ephemeral installation of a monumental work of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in New York City's Central Park. First conceived in 1979 and rejected by New York City government in 1981, the project was approved by Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration in 2003. The work of art consisted of 7503 16-foot-high vinyl gates with saffron-colored fabric panels on twenty-three miles of the Park's walkways. Seen from the buildings surrounding the Park, The Gates looked like a saffron flowing river, while those walking through them experienced the ambiance of a fluid golden ceiling. Financed entirely by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through their C.V.J. Corporation, The Gates were assembled and installed by thousands of paid workers. Completed on February 12, 2005, The Gates remained in place for sixteen days, after which they were removed and the materials recycled. The work of art was free for all visitors, who continued to use Central Park during the whole process. This historic event provided a memorable and joyous experience for New Yorkers and visitors. This special collector's volume documents the entire project from conception to realization. MARK RYDEN: BLOOD CD - MUSICAL SCORE BY STAN RIDGEWAY AND PIETRA WEXSTUN
(RYDEN, MARK) (RIDGWAY, STAN). Ryden, Mark, Stan Ridgway & Pietra Wexstun. Sierra Madre, CA: Porterhouse Fine Art Editions, 2003. First Edition 1/7500. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Artist Monograph. As New./No Jacket - As Issued. One 7 ¾ x 17" cardstock sheet printed color offset recto and verso, neatly folded in thirds to make 7 ¾ x 5 ½". Art Direction and Design by Mark Ryden and Brian Jackson. Produced in conjunction with Mark Ryden's "Blood: Miniature Paintings of Sorrow & Fear", this is a beautifully packaged CD of fourteen compositions that comprised the musical score and audio installation for the 2003 New York gallery exhibition. It contains five color reproductions of paintings from the show (that are the artist's near-perfect distillation of childhood creepiness transformed into adult fine art) that fold out to create a three-paneled shrine. Conceived by erstwhile Wall of Voodoo and Drywall founder Stan Ridgway along with Hecate's Angels' Pietra Wexstun, the performers are Ridgway - 6 and 12 string guitars, harmonica, Prophet 5, samples, Chamberlin; Wexstun - piano, organ, Juno 106, Mellotron, Moog, samples, autoharp, voices; Lazlo Vickers - cello, violin, contrabass; and Alvin Fike - brass, and reeds. Says Ridgway: "When contacted about writing music for Mr. Mark Ryden's "Blood Show ", we were excited and honored to be asked. Having both been admirers of Mark's work for quite some time, fellow composer Pietra Wexstun and I both saw it a lot like scoring a great film, but with one exception. The so called sonic "action" would be an interior one and psychological; a meditative and transcendental approach....and hopefully more like an "aroma" of sound; other than a music that would shout at you to listen to it, or get in the way. Ambient? Yes. We both worked for a musical "soundtrack" that the listener would "feel" more than hear. A functional and utilitarian device that would draw out the essential essence of the work and play low in the background, barely perceived by the viewer in the gallery". A brand new, pristine example of the 2003 first printing of this exotic object - not the later jewel-boxed reissue - still in the original shrinkwrap accompanied by an 8 x 6" glossy promotional postcard featuring a reproduction of Ryden's "The Baptism of Jajo" on the recto. With a unique style, Kuhn's intimate photographs of both young and old are sensual compositions of skin and wrinkles, light and shadow, gestures and gazes. She creates tautly composed images and balance sharply rendered portraits against blurred backgrounds to lure the eye and provoke the imagination". This is Brazilian born, California based photographer Mona Kuhn's extraordinary second book of portraits and nudes. Coming from a background that included time as an assistant to Jock Sturges, she has formed her own unique documentary approach that is an ongoing study of youth, nature, and the beauty of the unguarded human body. CHILDS NEW YORK RESTAURANT: A GROUP OF THREE LAVISHLY PRODUCED 1930 PROJECT DOCUMENTATION ALBUMS FROM PRUITT & BROWN ARCHITECTS
(CHILDS RESTAURANT). Pruitt & Brown Architects. New York: Pruitt & Brown Architects, 1930. First Editions. Folio. Gilt-Stamped Buckram. Architecture Monographs. Near Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 36pp + 48pp + 72pp, each profusely illustrated with original 7 ¼ x 9 ½" photographs and contemporary publication clippings. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. This is a group of three unique, lavishly hand-assembled 14 x 12 ½" project documentation books produced in 1930 by Pruitt & Brown Architects to showcase their design work for recently opened showpieces for the Childs Restaurant chain. Founded in New York in the 1880s, Childs became one of the first national dining chains, with over one hundred venues at its height. The firm's ownership changed hands just as the US slipped into the Great Depression, and Childs optimistically opened a series of elegant Manhattan dining establishments each differentiated by a distinct architectural theme presented as if one were stepping onto a glamorous Hollywood back lot set. These hefty volumes have been produced in the manner of a scrapbook with original sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs by the Peyser & Patzig firm affixed to thick linen-hinged pages throughout liberally supplemented by menus, correspondence, and newspaper, magazine, and press coverage of the projects. The first is devoted to the Childs Restaurant at 425 Lexington Avenue which was a jaw-dropping showpiece of Art Deco elegance. The second covers Childs "Old England" at 9 East 40th Street, which presented a Robin Hood-like décor. The third - and most comprehensive of these books - details William Child's "Old Algiers" at 102nd Street and Broadway, which simulated an exotic night at the Kasbah. The three are bound in differing hues of buckram over boards with still-bright gilt-stamped titles on their front covers and spines. Each is internally in Fine condition, and bears a typed label on the inside front board noting that the volume was issued by the Pruitt & Brown Architects office at 342 Madison Avenue for use at the firm's Charlottesville, VA office. The exteriors show varying degrees of wear, rubbing, and some light discoloration, but are still sound and in no way detract from the remarkable contents. These are stunning, near-unique documents of another time, place, and dining experience that must be seen in hand to be fully appreciated. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.
