RACE HATRED ON TRIAL
(WALKER, RYAN). Communist Party of the United States of America. Foreword by Jim Allen. New York: Daily Worker Publishing Company, 1931. First Edition. 12mo. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Civil Rights Document. Good -.. 48pp, 3 b&w illustrations + cover illustration. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. According to this publication's authors, "The trial of August Yokinen before 1,500 white and black workers in Harlem for acts clearly based on race prejudice was an event without example in the history of the American Labor Movement. He was not tried before any court of American ruling-class "justice." He was tried by a court of workers." Written and published by The Communist Party of the United States of America, "Race Hatred on Trial" is the transcript and summation of the 1931 Party-sponsored adjudication of Mr. Yokinen for his inhospitable treatment of three Negro workers attending a Finnish Workers Club entertainment in Harlem. As prefaced here, "the seriousness of the crime he committed against the working class is made clear in this pamphlet." To atone for his transgressions following the tribunal's guilty verdict, Yokinen was immediately expelled from the Communist Party and required to "actively participate in the struggle against white chauvinism throughout Harlem." An internally most presentable example of the uncommon 1931 first edition of this notable pre-World War II contribution to civil rights literature that includes four illustrations by leftist American political activist and cartoonist Ryan Walker showing pronounced wear, creasing, chipping, soiling, and minor paper loss to the extremities of its brittle newsprint covers; which appear to have at one point detached along the spine and been subsequently semi-artfully re-attached. It has been priced accordingly. Inventory Number: 026735

"ENGINEERS LIFE ON THE M.V. DALERDIJK" - A UNIQUE MID-CENTURY ALBUM OF A CREWMAN'S ORIGINAL DRAWINGS FROM THE VOYAGE OF A HOLLAND AMERICA LINER
Author Not Stated. NP. ND (Circa 1950).: Self-Published. Edition Not Stated - Presumed First. 8vo. Wrappers with a Twine Tie. Travel Album. Good./No Jacket - As Issued. np (32pp), 16 individual 5 x 7 ¼" hand-drawn illustrations in ink on heavy paper stock + 1 hand-drawn cover illustration. Text in English and Dutch. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Engineers Life On The M.V. Dalerdijk" is a unique handmade book consisting of sixteen charming original ink on paper illustrations documenting a voyage from Rotterdam to Cristobal, Panama and Los Angeles by a crew member of the Holland America Lines Cargo-Passenger Liner. The otherwise unidentified author was a talented amateur artist that documented scenes from his daily life onboard and while on shore leave between The Netherlands, South America, and the US. Built and originally named the Damsterdijk in 1930, after various vicissitudes during WW II the ship was reconditioned and renamed the M.V. Dalerdijk in 1949. By the early fifties the liner's name was anglicized as the M.V. Dalerdyk, so this original manuscript would have been created sometime between 1949 and 1953. Its caricature-like drawings - executed in a style not dissimilar to that of H.C. Westermann - are captioned: 1. "Wacht Der Honden", 2. "Pin Up Boy", 3. "Panama Nights", 4. "Breakfast", 5. "Officers Sundeck", 6. "Lunch", 7. "Officer!!!", 8. "No Diving", 9. "No Diving", 10. "Dinner", 11. "No Boys, Staff Only", 12. "Bridge", 13. "Krakken Loden", 14. "Kegel Club", 15. "Haar Debois", and 16. "Dalerdijk"; and inserted loosely into the diagonal corner cuts of photo album pages that have been hand bound at the spine with knotted twine. Written on the inside the rear cover in the artist's hand is "Index: How an Engineer Spent a Day" where the numbered plates are attributed to "At Sea", "In Cristobal", "In Los Angeles", "Any Other Port", and/or "Dalerdijk." On the inside front cover is the name and pre-Zip Code Los Angeles address of a previous owner we do not believe to be the author. An internally most handsome example of this fascinating object whose brittle, highly-acidic cardstock covers show some dampstaining and soiling along with browning, creasing, and chipping with attendant paper loss along the extruded edges. An internally most presentable example of this exceptionally uncommon item - not a single copy appears in either OCLC WorldCat or the holdings of the Los Angeles Public Library - starting to pull from the wrappers at the staples showing a dent at the head of the spine, notable wear and creasing, some dampstaining, and minor paper loss along the extremities of its illustrated pale blue cardstock covers. Photographs that never quite fit into their current projects or are waiting to become the narrative of their next book or show, but that are too good to be left unused. They persist: the photographers pull them out, year after year, they recognize them as great images that should be shared, but the photos somehow frustratingly defy their years of shuffling into categorization or conventional use. This box set is those photographs, finally liberated from that file labeled "Orphans & Misfits". Todd Hido's first B-Sides Box Set, "Silver Meadows", is a follow-up publication to the artist's award-winning 2013 monograph "Excerpts from Silver Meadows". Designed to function as a companion to that title as well as a sovereign object in its own right, the selection includes alternate images that didn't make it into the book, as well as variations of images that did. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the photographer selects and arranges images in book form. 'Making good and interesting pictures is only half of what it takes to make a memorable visual book,' Hido explains. BRUCE WEBER: ALL-AMERICAN XVII: GLORY BE
(WEBER, BRUCE). Weber, Bruce, Nan Bush, Nathaniel Kilcer & Matthew Richards, Editors. New York: Little Bear Press, 2017. First Edition. 4to. 1/4 Linen Over Wrappers. Photography Monograph. As New.. np (200pp), profusely illustrated in duotone and color. Art Director - Nathaniel Kilcer. XXX In this seventeenth edition of his annual arts journal, Bruce Weber considers the wisdom of the experienced and the conviction of the young as a framework for hope in disorienting times. He profiles the veteran stage actor Cherry Jones and the long-time CBS news anchor Bob Schieffer, whose respective careers stand as testaments to personal ingenuity, common sense, and the power of adaptability. The uncommon life of the late philanthropist and entrepreneur Jay Weiss - a pillar of the Miami community - is narrated with humor and candor by two of his daughters, Jennie Weiss Block and Laurie Weiss Nuell. Patti Ragan, the founder of the Center for Great Apes, shares her devotion to primates abandoned by the entertainment industry. In addition to these profiles, Weber presents photo essays devoted to Sergeant James Jensen IV, a decorated Army veteran trying to navigate the return to civilian life, and Marge Winski, the soulful lighthouse keeper who stands watch over Montauk Point on the East End of Long Island, NY. "All-American XVII: Glory Be" is also rich with original commissioned works. Noe Dewitt documents the final days of Saint Anthony, a parochial school in Jersey City, in a story that explores the unique relationship between its celebrated basketball coach, Bob Hurley, and one of his last star players, R.J. Cole. An all-star lineup of contemporary women photographers - Lynda Churilla, Stef Mitchell, Yelena Yemchuk, and Olivia Bee - reflect on the experience of chronicling the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. And Joel Griffith presents a highly personal, contemplative study of The Rockaways - a quiet corner of Queens that mirrors the hopes and contradictions of New York City at large. The journal closes with a heartfelt dedication to Sam Shepard - the celebrated author, playwright and a frequent subject of Weber’s lens". "As one of the 21st Century's most traveled, acclaimed, and influential fashion photographers, Mario Testino has unsurpassed access to the most magnetic stars of popular culture. For some time now he has been collecting a personal archive of off-screen moments, often snatched spontaneously before, during, and after more official sittings for "Vanity Fair", "Vogue", and Testino's many clients in the world of fashion. The result is a portrait not just of a generation of the most wanted and talked-about, but an invitation to be part of the backstage parties and unstaged moments of Testino's life. Sometimes offbeat, but always on the pulse, "Let Me In!", with Testino's eye for a modern kind of elegance liberated from conventional polish, is a new chapter from the photographer who has already made his mark with the books "Any Objections", "Front Row Backstage", "Alive", "Portraits", "Kids", "Diana Princess of Wales", and numerous exhibitions and publications worldwide".
