THADDEUS MOSLEY
(MOSLEY, THADDEUS) Foreword by Ingrid Schaffner. Text by Brett Littman, Jessica Bell Brown, Ed Roberson, Connie Choi. Interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist. Poetry by Sam Gilliam. KARMA, I00201022, 2020. First Edition. 7 x 9 in., 312 pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
Long needed, and already out of print, this is the first full overview of American abstract sculptor Thad Mosley
Since 1959, the monumental, freestanding sculptures of Pittsburgh-based artist Thad Mosley, crafted with reclaimed building materials and felled trees, have occupied the forefront of abstraction in American sculpture. This book surveys his career.
Using only a mallet and chisel, he reworks salvaged timber into biomorphic forms. With influences ranging from Isamu Noguchi to Constantin Brâncuși—and the Bamum, Dogon, Baoulé, Senufo, Dan, and Mossi works of his personal collection—Mosley’s sculptures mark an inflection point in the history of American abstraction. These “sculptural improvisations,” as he calls them, take cues from the modernist traditions of jazz. “The only way you can really achieve something is if you’re not working so much from a pattern,” Mosley says of his improvisational method. “That’s also the essence of good jazz.”

TO MAKE THEIR OWN WAY IN THE WORLD: THE ENDURING LEGACY OF THE ZEALY DAGUERREOTYPES
By Ilisa Barbash, Molly Rogers, and Deborah Willis. Foreword by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.. Contributions by Carrie Mae Weems. Aperture and Peabody Museum Press, I00201006, 2020. 9 x 7 in., 488 pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
To Make Their Own Way in the World is a profound consideration of some of the most challenging images in the history of photography: fifteen daguerreotypes of Alfred, Delia, Drana, Fassena, Jack, Jem, and Renty—men and women of African descent who were enslaved in South Carolina.
Photographed by Joseph T. Zealy for Harvard professor Louis Agassiz in 1850, they were rediscovered at Harvard’s Peabody Museum in 1976. This groundbreaking multidisciplinary volume features essays by prominent scholars who explore such topics as the identities of the people depicted in the daguerreotypes, the close relationship between photography and race, and visual narratives of slavery and its lasting effects.
With over two hundred illustrations, including new photography by Carrie Mae Weems, this book frames the Zealy daguerreotypes as works of urgent engagement. 9781597114783 Inventory Number: I00201006 -

The first monograph on Los Angeles legend Luchita Hurtado, whose colorful, surrealist paintings are now garnering recognition after decades on the fringes
At 98 years old, Luchita Hurtado (born 1929) is finally gaining mainstream recognition for the bright, geometric patterns and the surrealist nature scenes of her virbant paintings, but the Venezuela-born, California-based artist is no stranger to the art world. Though she once rubbed elbows with the likes of Frida Kahlo and Marcel Duchamp early on in her career, Hurtado now has the spotlight to herself, with solo exhibitions in Los Angeles and London, and this very first comprehensive, fully illustrated monograph detailing her artistic process and the prolific output of work from throughout her career.
In addition to reproductions of Hurtado's strikingly contemporary drawings and paintings, Luchita Hurtado: I Live I Die I Will Be Reborn also includes a series of vignettes penned by Hurtado's son, the artist Matt Mullican, as well as an interview between the artist and Hans Ulrich Obrist. CONGO AS FICTION: ART WORLDS BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT
Edited by Nanina Guyer and Michaela Oberhofer. Museum Rietberg, I00200813, 2020. 9 x 11 in., 328 pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
There is no single voice of the Democratic Republic of Congo but a multitude of diverse cultures and voices, contributing to a vibrant art scene that attracts interest from around the world. Nowhere in Africa is there an art scene more varied in form, media, and material.
Published to accompany an exhibition at Museum Rietberg in Zurich, Congo as Fiction: Art Worlds between Past and Present juxtaposes objects collected and photographs by the German anthropologist Hans Himmelheber during his journey to the Congo from 1938 to 1939 with works by contemporary Congolese artists and essays that investigate the fictions of Congo in both African and Western imaginations. The colorful masks and richly decorated everyday objects collected by Himmelheber reflect the extraordinary creativity and innovativeness of Congolese artists of the period but also the collector’s own idea of Congo. The book links the past with contemporary artistic production, showing how for many years Congolese artists like Sammy Baloji and Sinzo Aanza have been exploring in their work the effects of colonialism and globalized trade. 9783858818355 Inventory Number: I00200813 -
RICK McCLOSKEY: VAN NUYS BOULEVARD 1972
(MCCLOSKEY, RICK). McCloskey, Rick. Zurich, SWITZERLAND: Sturm and Drang, I00200717, 2020. 3rd Printing. 9 x 11 in., 132 pages. Hardbound. Photography Monograph. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
American car culture at its vibrant best
Wednesday night was Cruise Night in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles. The stretch on Van Nuys Boulevard between Ventura Boulevard on the southern end, and well past Sherman Way to the north, teemed with kids and cars from all over Southern California on Wednesday nights. It was a terrific place to both see and be seen, and to show off your ride as well.
Gas was cheap, times were great, and the boulevard hummed with life during the evenings. Even the draft during the Vietnam War did not dampen the street scene. By 1972, the year Rick McCloskey went to Van Nuys to shoot his series of photographs, the culture on the boulevard had become an amalgamation of divergent lifestyles, automobiles – used and new – and some very different looks and styles. There were tribes of van kids – surfers mostly – low-riders, muscle cars, street racers, Volkswagen owners, and many more, and of course, thousands of young people. The idea of retro had arrived as well, with some young people emulating the look and style of the 1950s. Of course, there were individuals who had to be there for work. In making these images, Rick McCloskey set about portraying the young people, their cars, and the iconic background settings.
Today, young people no longer have anything similar to the past boulevard gathering places, where so many people can enjoy just being there together. Akin to starlight still trickling in from a long vanished world, these photographic images are what we have left. 978-1910164761 Inventory Number: I00200717 -

GALERIE HALF: SELECTED WORKS / SPACES
(GALERIE HALF). Smith, Cameron. Introduction by Rosa Park. Foreword by Kathe Clements and Tommy Clements. Photography by Shade Degges. Paris, France: Flammarion, I00240217. 2023. First Edition. 12 1/2 x 9 1/2", 4to. Cloth with Pasterdown. Design Monograph. New/No Jacket - As Issued. 342pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English. "A favorite purveyor to the Los Angeles design cognoscenti, Galerie Half is imbued with a sense of timeless imperfection. Pieces from disparate design traditions converge seamlessly in a single room: a bleached Gustavian daybed is flanked by a Roman statue, a Venetian mirror reflects African masks, and a rustic farmhouse table is framed by caned chairs. Galerie Half is talented at constructing such diverse compositions. A vivid hue can create synchronicity between the timeworn patina of a glazed terracotta planter and the softened leather of an Advocat and Press chair by Le Corbusier–Pierre Jeanneret. A monochromatic palette of contrasting textures can ground a room, creating harmony between luxurious and humble materials, or signed and anonymous designs. Similarly, complementary shapes can provide balance—the horizontal stripes on a Finnish floor lamp echo those in Marcel Breuer’s 1932 armchair, and the seductive curve of Carlo Mollino’s Suora lamp mimics that of Rick Owens’s marble stool. The genius of Galerie Half and the celebrity homes that they have appointed lies in this artful curation of individual elements with soul.". LIGHT ON FIRE: THE ART AND LIFE OF SAM FRANCIS
(FRANCIS, SAM). Selz, Gabrielle. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 2021. First Edition. 8vo. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Artist Biography. As New/As New. 0-520-31071-3
392pp, 22 b&w and 11 color photos illustrations. "Light on Fire" is the first comprehensive biography of Sam Francis, one of the most important American abstract artists of the twentieth century. Based on Gabrielle Selz’s unprecedented access to Francis' files, as well as private correspondence and hundreds of interviews, this book traces the extraordinary and ultimately tragic journey of a complex and charismatic artist who first learned to paint as a former air-corps pilot encased for three years in a full-body cast. While still a young man, Francis saw his color-saturated paintings fetch the highest prices of any living artist. His restless desire resulted in five marriages and homes on three continents; his entrepreneurial spirit led to founding a museum, a publishing company, a reforestation program and several nonprofit organizations. "Light on Fire" captures the art, life, personality, and talent of a man whom the art historian and museum director William C. Agee described as a rare artist participating in the “visionary reconstruction of art history,” defying creative boundaries among the likes of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning. With settings from World War II San Francisco to postwar Paris, New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, Selz crafts an intimate portrait of a man who sought to resolve in art the contradictions he couldn’t resolve in life." A LIBRARY OF MISREMEMBERED BOOKS
(LUZ, MARINA). Chronicle Books, 2021. 4 1/2" x 6", 96 pages. Hardbound. New. 9780847870646
How do you find a book when you can't recall the title…or the author? This homage to a common reader's dilemma is a gift the booklover in your life won't soon forget.
Readers know all too well the comedy and tragedy of forgetting the name of a must-find book. Inspired by this torturous predicament, artist Marina Luz creates paintings of books based on the descriptions we use when we can't remember their titles—mining Internet book-search forums for the quirky, vague, and often hilarious language we come up with in these moments. This volume collects dozens of these imaginary books into a library all their own: Titles like "Cat, Possibly Named Henry," "It Was All a Dream," or "Something-Something, Beverly Hills" inspire dreaming up their contents, often as entertaining as trying to guess the real book behind them. A celebration of book love unlike any other, this petite book is a clever gift for bibliophiles that will spark knowing smiles.
Marina Luz is an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Vice, and ProPublica, among other publications. She runs her illustration and design studio Honeylux out of Oakland, California. She found these descriptions during her own search for a forgotten book, Iceberg Shows Up Overnight in Front of Hotel.

272pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "A desire to redefine the ways architecture can contribute to truly progressive causes has always been a hallmark of the work of Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA). From transforming unloved parcels of land in Los Angeles and Detroit to intensely creative and eminently livable housing complexes for students, tech workers, and underserved populations such as veterans, this firm has time and again proved its ability to design intelligently and with a deeply embedded social conscience. LOHA ensures that even its most contemporary-looking creations reflect in some way the personality of the site or longtime inhabitants. The firm may accomplish this by incorporating familiar materials, such as the stone used in a surrounding neighborhood’s most beloved historic downtown buildings, or reinterpreting 1970s A-frame houses by cleverly updating their angles for the twenty-first century to bring light and air deep into a constrained urban lot." A brand new, most handsome example of this thught-provoking new monograph additionally SIGNED by Lorcan O'Herlihy and Greg Goldin.

In 2018 LOHA was awarded the status of #1 Design Firm in the US by Architect Magazine."

(176pp), 121 color illustrations. Text in English, Ukrainian, and Russian. "Ukrainian-born, Brooklyn-based photographer and painter Yelena Yemchuk is most commonly known for her fashion and portrait photographs, which have appeared in Italian and Japanese Vogue, V, the New Yorker and The New York Times. Yemchuk makes images that teeter on the threshold between her Eastern European heritage and her daily life in New York; between fiction and reality; between the grand beauty of 1960s cinema and the social and built environments of post-Soviet realms. As with all of her work, "Malanka" is a personal, feminine, surrealist and magical project. The eponymous tradition is a pre-Christian folklore ritual driving out winter and welcoming spring, an ancient custom reminiscent of Persephone’s return in Greek mythology. It is celebrated on January 14th, the old New Year in the Julian calendar, by ethnic Romanians in western Ukraine. In 2019 and 2020, Yemchuk traveled to Crasna (Krasnoilsk in Ukrainian) to document the night-long festival. Accompanying Yemchuk's striking photographic documentation is a poetic essay by Romanian cultural journalist Ioana Pelehatai. TODD HIDO: HOUSE HUNTING (REMASTERED)
(HIDO, TODD). Hido, Todd & A.M. Homes. Paso Robles, CA: Nazraeli Press, 2019. First Edition Thus 1 /4000. Small Folio. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. As New/As New.
“Todd Hido’s large color photographs of suburbia are lonely, forlorn, mysterious… and strangely comforting. Hido photographs the interior rooms of repossessed tract homes, and the outsides of similar houses at night whose habitation is suggested by the glow of a television set or unseen overhead bulb. Seldom does the similar evoke such melancholy. Yet rather than passing judgment on his anonymous subjects, Hido manages to turn the banal into something beautiful, imbuing his prints of interiors with soft pastels, and allowing the exteriors to glow in the cool evening air.” — From Nazraeli's description of the first printing of House Hunting, announced in 2000. We are excited to announce a newly remastered edition of Todd Hido’s iconic and highly sought-after first monograph, House Hunting. To celebrate the upcoming 20th anniversary of this important book – certainly one of the most influential and oft-cited photography monographs of our time – Nazraeli has collaborated closely with the artist to achieve a new impression of the highest possible fidelity. Printed on heavy weight matte art paper, using cutting-edge technologies in both the pre-press and production phases, this new edition of House Hunting stays true to the original design and format while delivering even more accurate color rendition and nuances in tone and saturation. It will be a welcome addition to collections lacking access to the very scarce original printings; and to those fortunate enough to own a copy of the original edition, it further illuminates the images themselves that first catapulted the artist and his first monograph to fame. Todd Hido’s photographs have been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, and most recently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, Switzerland. Other major institutions that have exhibited Hido’s work include the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Miami Art Museum, Florida; Netherland Architecture Institute, Rotterdam; Palazzo Ducale, Genova, Italy; Samsung Museum of Modern Art in Korea; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work was recently on view in the 49th edition of Les Recontres d’Arles, France. Work by Hido is held in public and private collections including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Smithsonian; and Fotomuseum Winterthur." TODD HIDO: BRIGHT BLACK WORLD - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(HIDO, TODD). Hido, Todd & Howard Nemerov. Paso Robles, CA: Nazraeli Press, 2018. First Edition 1/3000. Oblong Small Folio. Pictorial Cloth. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 104pp, 48 color illustrations. Designed by Bob Awfuldish and Todd Hido. "For over two decades, Todd Hido has crafted narratives through loose and mysterious suburban scenes, desolate landscapes, and stylized portraits. He has traversed North America capturing places that feel at once familiar and unknown; welcoming and unsettling. Underscoring the influences of Nordic mythology and specifically the idea of Fimbulwinter, which translates into the ‘endless winter’, Hido’s new monograph, "Bright Black World" alludes to and provides form for this notion of an apocalyptic, never-ending winter. Exploring the dark terrain of the Northern European landscape and regions as far as the North Sea of Japan enchanted Hido, calling him back on several occasions. This presents the artist’s first significant foray extensively photographing territory outside of the United States, chronicling a decidedly new psychological geography. Opening with a text by Alexander Nemerov, "Bright Black World" contains forty-eight plates printed in an oversized format, featuring two vertical gatefolds and a fold-out poster measuring some 25 by 40 inches. (SHUBUCK, SIMONE). Shubuck, Simone, Janine Foeller, Jim Dempsey & Alex Wagner. New York, NY: Self-published. Printed in Poland by Szaransky, 2018. First Edition. 4to. Debossed Cloth. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued.
"In the summer of 2017, Simone Shubuck launched WIFEY, a Brooklyn pop up that fused art, food, ceramics, flowers, and bit of retail in an elevated DIY way. During the process, Shubuck realized that so much of what she was doing directly connected to a show she staged as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1990s. Wanting to formalize that multi-decade connection, she decided to make a book.
While at the Art institute, Shubuck studied painting, but probably spent more time tagging on the streets in the middle of the night than in her studio. When it came time to produce her student show, she constructed ten very unusual fake cakes festooned with pink ham hocks, a school of fresh sardines, a tent of chicken feet, and live crickets within a hat box within a cake. It was these images that attracted chefs Ignacio Mattos and Natasha Pickowicz of Estela, Flora Bar, and Cafe Altro Paradiso to the project. They became partners and began experimenting with dreamy layers cakes, which were served at WIFEY and were met with great acclaim.
As described by Ella Riley-Adams on Vogue.com: "She had made a paged project before; a short run of 'zines for Natasha Pickowicz’s bake sale benefit at Altro Paradiso. “It had more of a punk vibe,” Shubuck says—150 copies, printed in Chinatown. The new book feels more like a collector’s item: a retrospective of off-kilter cakes, blossoming drawings, and character-filled ceramics that charts Shubuck’s creative course that would make the ideal gift for the cool girl in your life. As Alex Wagner writes, next to a bright yellow page in the book: “Simone’s work - on paper, in clay, in life! - retains a glorious sense of mess and possibility and freedom.”
Includes texts by Janine Foeller, Jim Dempsey, and Alex Wagner.

The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941
A massive, full-illustrated history of photography book making and design from the USSR
Published by Steidl
Edited by Mikhail Karasik, Manfred HeitingThe Soviet Union was unique in its dynamic use of the illustrated book as a means of propaganda. Through the form of the book, the USSR articulated its utopian (and eventually totalitarian) ideologies and expressed its absolute power through avant-garde writing and radical graphic design that was in full flower during the 1920s and 1930s.
No other country or political system advanced its cause by attracting and employing acclaimed members of the avant-garde. Among them were writers such as Semion Kirsanov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Ilya Selvinsky, Sergei Tretyakov and Kornely Zelinsky; artist designers such as Gustav Klutsis, Valentina Kulagina, El Lissitzky, Sergei Senkin, Varvara Stepanova, Solomon Telingater and Nikolai Troshin; and photographers such as Dmitry Debabov, Vladimir Griuntal, Boris Ignatovich, Alexander Khlebnikov, Yeleazar Langman, Alexander Rodchenko and Georgy Petrusov, not to mention many of the best printing plants and bookbinders.
Gorgeously produced, edited and designed, The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941 presents 160 of the most stunning and elaborately produced photobooks from this period and includes more than 400 additional reference illustrations. The book also provides short biographies of the photobook contributors, some of whom are presented for the first time.Inventory Number: E000SOVIET

STEVE BANKS: NITRO, DRAG RACING IN THE SIXTIES: 1964-1966 - SIGNED, SLIPCASED LIMITED EDITION
(BANKS, STEVE). Banks, Steve. Paso Robles, CA: Nazraeli Press, 2019. First Edition 1/350. Small Folio. Cloth in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (60pp), 28 duotone illustrations.
np, profusely illustrated in tritone. "In 1964, a young Steve Banks bought one of the most coveted ‘Muscle Cars’ on the market - a Pontiac GTO with a four-speed stick and a Hurst shifter, Tri-Power, and three Rochester 2G carburetors. He then drove Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to begin his new advertising agency job. Gassing up one day after arriving at Nobo’s Shell station at Beverly and Larchmont, Banks learned that Nobo had previously been head mechanic at the Courtesy Chevrolet dealership, and that his station had become a center for building and tuning street racers. On and off over the next few months, Banks would leave his car at the garage while Nobo fine-tuned the carburetors, replaced the stock tires, torsion, and sway bars, and added Koni shocks and a Sun tachometer. Next, he taught Banks how to ‘speed shift’ while making late night runs up and down Larchmont Boulevard. One day, Nobo mentioned he was going to a drag race that Saturday, and that Banks was welcome to come along. Witnessing his first drag race, Steve Banks was immediately hooked. He returned the following Saturday, and the next, and again the next; but this time with his cameras. Over the course of two years, Banks photographed guys preparing runs, the thundering nitro-burning dragsters launching down the strip at two hundred-plus miles per hour, and everything else that moved. Today, fifty years later, the sport of drag racing is a big bucks, corporate-sponsored television broadcast business with the NHRA sporting over two hundred different drag racing classes. However, in a nod to the sport’s modest beginnings, almost every weekend from coast-to-coast one can find "nostalgia racing" events preserving the dragster culture of the 1960s captured here in NITRO, Drag Racing In The Sixties: 1964-1966." A brand new, pristine specially-priced SIGNED AND SLIPCASED AP example of this stunning volume from the fourth and final set of the NZ Library editions limited to three hundred and fifty copies.

REIMAGINING THE AVANT-GARDE: REVISITING THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE 1960s AND 1970s
Butcher, Matthew & Luke C. Pearson, Editors. New York: John Wiley & Sons, 2019. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Wrappers. Architectural History. As New./No Jacket - As Issued..
The 1960s and 1970s avant-garde has been likened to an "architectural Big Bang", such was the intensity of energy and ambition in which it exploded into the postwar world. Marked out by projects that redefined the discipline, it remains just as influential today. References to the likes of Archizoom, Peter Eisenman, John Hejduk and Superstudio abound. Highly diverse, the avant-garde cannot be defined as a single strand or tendency. It was divergent geographically - reaching from Europe to North America and Japan - and in its political, formal and cultural preoccupations. It was unified, though, as a critical and experimental force, critiquing contemporary society against the backdrop of extreme social and political upheaval: the Paris riots of May 1968, the anti-Vietnam war movement in America and the looming ecological crisis. Re-imagining the Avant-Garde outlines how in contemporary architectural practice, avant-garde projects retain their power as historical precedents, as barometers of a particular design ethos, as critiques of society and instigators of new formal techniques. Given the far-reaching impact of the subsequent digital revolution, which has since reshaped every aspect of practice, the issue asks why this historical period continues to retain its undeniable grip on current architecture.
A brand new, most handsome example of this thought-provoking architectural re-assessment whose contributors include Pablo Bronstein and Sam Jacob, Sarah Deyong, Stylianos Giamarelos, Damjan Jovanovic, Andrew Kovacs, Perry Kulper, Igor Marjanovic, William Menking, Michael Sorkin, Neil Spiller and Mimi Zeiger.

RANDI MALKIN STEINBERGER: NO CIRCUS - SIGNED!
Malkin Steinberger, Randi and D.J. Waldie. Damiani, 2016.
No Circus brings together photographs by Los Angeles–based Randi Malkin Steinberger of buildings tented for termite fumigation around Los Angeles. After moving to the city in the early ‘90s, she encountered these shrouded structures and began to stop and photograph them, knowing that the tent might be undraped at any given moment.
Steinberger was intrigued by the way the colors and shapes of the tents showed off the forms below and highlighted the beauty of the poor plants on the outside, still flourishing, unaware that they were slowly being poisoned. Beyond the intended purpose of fumigation, these tents unwittingly allow us to stop and contemplate not only architectural form and the meaning of home, but also the Southern California lifestyle more broadly.
Books will be signed by Ms. Steinberger and Mr. Waldie on 10/1/16. 9788862084802 Inventory Number: E000RMSNC -

RICHARD EDSON: YEAR ZERO - LOCKDOWN JOURNAL - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

548 pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "I began the Year Zero Lockdown Journal on March 20th, 2020. On the first day I took my bicycle and camera and rode through the empty, silent streets of Los Angeles. Everything looked the same, but everything was completely different. I took photos and came back and wrote about it. And I kept it up for next twelve months, through our personal and collective isolation, through the ups and downs of the pandemic, the slow, halting opening of society, the politicization of the virus, the George Floyd protests, the elections, the Stop-the-Steal movement, and the storming of the Capital. Covid-19 was beyond anything we thought possible or could even imagine. It's the stuff of science fiction and dystopian nightmares. But the writers and doomsayers were right. And here we are. Each of us who have lived through Year Zero have our own stories to tell. This, in photographs and texts, is mine." Published by Artvoices Books, "Year Zero - Lockdown Journal" features two beautifully packaged hardcover books in a slipcase subtitled, "Spring & Summer" and "Fall & Winter."Richard Edson has been acting in films for nearly forty years, appearing in over one hundred movies and television shows. His more notable roles include a disreputable parking garage attendant in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Howard the Duck (1986), Jim Jarmusch's cult film Stranger Than Paradise (1984), Eight Men Out, and Joey Breaker (1993). He also appeared in Platoon (1986), Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Tougher Than Leather (1988), Let It Ride (1989), and Do the Right Thing (1989). He starred in the 1993 movie Super Mario Bros as Spike (1987). As a photographer he has had four solo exhibitions in Los Angeles and has been in countless group exhibits. He has also appeared in Juxtapose, Puta, and The Propagandist magazines and photography assignments for Wax Poetics and American Apparel, and many others. Until recently he had a monthly photo spread / column in the Los Angeles downtown arts magazine, Citizen LA. In addition to acting and photography he was a founding member and first drummer for the seminal art rock band Sonic Youth, and drummer / trumpet player for the legendary New York Afro-dance band, Konk.

QUEER THREADS: CRAFTING IDENTITY AND COMMUNITY
Chaich, John and Todd Oldham. Pasadena, CA: Ammo Books, 2017. First Edition. 10 1/4 x 8 1/4", Small 4to. Hardcover. New/No Jacket - As Issued. 192pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "Queer Threads: Crafting Identity and Community" spotlights an international, intergenerational, intersectional mix of thirty artists who are remixing fiber craft traditions, such as crochet, embroidery, quilting, and sewing, while reconsidering the binaries of art and craft, masculine and feminine, and gay and straight. Designed by Todd Oldham and edited by John Chaich, "Queer Threads" features full-color spreads of each artist's work, along with intimate details of selections and artist studios, as well as an introductory essay by Chaich, who curated the exhibition of the same name that inspired this book.To further examine how queerness informs their work in fiber and textiles, or vice versa, the artists are interviewed by makers and thinkers from the worlds of dance, design, fashion, media, music, museums, scholarship, and more—many members of the LGBTQ+ community themselves, and otherwise passionate allies. Smart yet playful, critical yet celebratory, the resulting dialogues are as colorful, challenging, personal, and universal as the works discussed and talents showcased. Queer Threads is not just an exploration of fiber art and crafts, but also a celebration of the creativity, diversity, and vibrancy of contemporary queer culture. A brand new, most handsome example of this now sadly out of print gem. 9781623261054 Inventory Number: E000QT

Fifteen years of Platon’s visually arresting and often dangerous documentation of human rights movements, from Cairo to the Congo
The celebrated portraitist Platon has spent much of his career photographing the famous and powerful, but he has also traveled the world documenting human rights activists and their quests for justice. The Defenders presents five photo essays spanning 15 years of work on these struggles in Burma, Egypt, Russia, the United States and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In Burma, he took portraits of monks, sex workers, former child soldiers and the controversial political leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He was on the ground in Cairo for several weeks early in 2011, when Egyptians took to the streets and demanded the resignation of Hosni Mubarak. In Russia, he photographed and spoke with dissidents who have battled a slew of oppressive governments. Along the border between the US and Mexico, he documented victims of inhumane immigration policies. Finally, the chapter on the Congo documents the continuing trauma of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
The full-bleed images are accompanied by short texts that contextualize the complex issues in each place, and retell Platon’s own stories of shooting on location. The book also includes a poster.

NADAV KANDER: THE MEETING

324pp, 151 color and 118 b&w illustrations.
"Regardless of his sitter - whether family member or influential celebrity - the portraiture of London-based photographer Nadav Kander shows what makes that particular individual human. His aim is to move beyond capturing an accurate likeness to access the emotions within, the uncertainty, the shadow as much as the light, the complex sense of self that otherwise lays hidden. “Revealed and concealed, beauty and destruction, ease and disease, shame and shameless,” explains the photographer, “These paradoxes are essential to all my work and represent what is common to all my varied subject matter.” This collection, the first book dedicated to his portraiture, shows the range and nuance of Kander’s work from Barack Obama, John le Carré and Alexander McQueen to Tracey Emin, Robert Plant and Prince Charles. Layered and penetrating, these remarkable images reveal unexpected moments of reverie and vulnerability."

Michael Schmelling: Your Blues - SIGNED
Schmelling, Michael. The Ice Plant and Skinnerboox, 2018. In 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Photography commissioned American photographer Michael Schmelling to make a new series of photographs about music in his hometown of Chicago. First shown as the solo exhibition Your Blues in 2014 (curated by Karen Irvine), this ambitious body of work now takes form of an artist book, co-published by The Ice Plant and Skinnerboox. Schmelling spent eighteen months immersed in the project, crisscrossing Chicago alone at night, making his way into basement shows, crowded clubs, parties, and recording studios (“waiting in the dark for a communal experience with strangers,” as he describes it), documenting both the communal culture at large — musicians and fans alike — and the DIY individualism of the characters involved. Focussing on niche and local acts in unconventional venues, Schmelling’s work reflects a vibrant, fluid crossover between the region’s music genres, a diffuse legacy that encompasses the blues, punk, psychedelic jazz, rap, emo, hardcore, and house music. In Chicago “there’s no dominant cultural tradition,” writes musician Tim Kinsella in an essay included in the book. “The dominant form is hybridity.” Teeming with enthralled bodies and ecstatic faces, Your Blues is an energetic and intimate document of a time and place, featuring over 200 meticulously sequenced photographs, puzzled together through subtle rhythms and recurring visual riffs, infusing Schmelling’s own personal photo-cryptology into the evolving musical history of the city.
Please note: Mr. Schmelling will be signing books at Arcana on October 13th -- orders will ship on Tuesday, October 16th. Inventory Number: E000MSYB -
MIKE SLACK: THE TRANSVERSE PATH - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(SLACK, MIKE). Slack, Mike. Los Angeles: The Ice Plant, 2017. First Edition. 4to. Decorative Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/ No Jacket - As Issued. np (100pp), 50 color illustrations. "Clouds, electronics, fog, bugs, glass, cellophane, rust, weeds, waves, particles… Mike Slack delves into an overheated terrestrial ecosystem in "The Transverse Path, surveying a luminous topography of monumental details and mundane vistas with cosmic curiosity. Transcendental in mood, Slack’s vaguely sci-fi photographs envision a sun-blasted wilderness of synthetic and organic stuff, all tangled together, flourishing and disintegrating on its own terms, as if engaged in an ageless negotiation (or flirtation?) just beyond our grasp. Where does nature end and its opposite begin? And where do people figure into this balance? Made primarily around the American southwest from 2011 to 2017, these vivid compositions — like a series of thought-bubbles in search of a narrative — are concise and direct, yet driven by an emotional ambivalence that hovers between stark environmental dread and calm intimate reverie". A brand new, pristine example of the first The Ice Plant edition limited to nine hundred unnumbered copies additionally SIGNED "Mike Slack" in ink.

MICHAEL BRODIE: FAILING - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(BRODIE, MIKE). Brodie, Michael. Los Angeles, CA: Twin Palms Publishers, I00250215. 2024.. First Edition 1/3000. 11 x 8 1/2" 4to. Wrappers in Printed Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. New./New.. 978-1-936611-23-2
np (412pp), 193 color illustrations. Designed by Paul Schiek and Kevin Messina. "Mike Brodie’s first monograph, "A Period of Juvenile Prosperity" touched down more than a decade ago, depicting his fellow rail-riders and drifters in a rebellious and wildfire pursuit of adventure and freedom. “Brodie leapt into the life of picture-making as if he was the first to do it,” Danny Lyon wrote about the book in Aperture. Next came "Tones of Dirt and Bone", a collection of earlier SX-70 pictures Brodie made when photography first led him to hopping freights, when he was known as “The Polaroid Kidd.” And then Brodie seemed to disappear from the art world as suddenly and mysteriously as he’d first appeared. Maybe his vanishing was another myth. Maybe it was just a necessary retreat. “I was divorcing myself from all that,” he says. “I was growing up. I was pursuing this other life.” In Nashville he became a diesel mechanic. Fell in love. Moved across the country again. Got married. Bought land on the long dusty Winnemucca road Johnny Cash sang about. Started his own business. Built a house. Put down roots. And when that life exploded, the open road called again. Throughout almost all of it, his cameras were with him, and at last those pictures are coming to light. If Michael Brodie’s first monograph was a cinematic dream, Failing is the awakening and the reckoning, a raw, wounded, and searingly honest photographic diary of a decade marked by love and heartbreak, loss and grief — biblical in its scope, and in its search for truth and meaning. Here is the flip side of the American dream, seen from within; here is bearing close witness to the brutal chaos of addiction and death; here are front-seat encounters with hitchhikers and kindred wanderers on society’s edges, sustained by the ragtag community of the road. Failing often exists in darkness but is tuned to grace. Brodie’s eye stays forever open to the strange and fleeting beauty that exists in forgotten places — the open country and the lost horizons that sweep past dust-spattered windows in a spectral blur.". (MORGIN, KRISTEN). Morgin, Kristen & Marc Selwyn. Beverly Hills, CA: Marc Selwyn Fine Art, 2022. First Edition. 10 x 8 1/2'. Printed Boards with Illustrated Pastedown. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 120pp, profusely illustrated in color. 978-0-578-33196-6
"Kristen Morgin lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work, which is formed with a mixture of clay, glue, cement and other media, comes from a ceramic background but goes far beyond traditional uses of the medium. Her sculptures have an affinity to the constructions of George Herms, Edward Kienholz, and Michael McMillen, but evoke relics of contemporary culture that may have been buried and unearthed at a later date. Toys, books, comics and other objects are rendered true to scale in unfired clay and recall the artist’s childhood. Corroding surfaces evoke mortality, decay and the passage of time. Eccentric narratives and playful juxtapositions come together to form new objects with unexpected connotations."
A brand new, pristine example of this newly published, elegantly designed comprehensive hardbound monograph featuring a lengthy transcribed interview with the artist by her gallerist, Marc Selwyn, that is additionally SIGNED BY THE ARTIST WITH A SMALL DRAWING AT THE REAR COLOPHON.

JIM GOLDBERG: COMING AND GOING - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(GOLDBERG, JIM). Goldberg, Jim. London, UK: MACK Books, I00231004. 2023. First Edition. 13 1/2 X 10 1/2", Large 4to. Illustrated Wrappers. Photography Monograph. New./New.. 360pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Jim Goldberg. 978-1-912339-77-8
"Coming and Going is Jim Goldberg’s unique work of autobiography. Since 1999, Goldberg has been photographing his daily life through all its vicissitudes and returning to his studio to re-imagine and investigate these images through a practice of collage, annotation, montage, and reconstruction for which he has become renowned. This book charts a course through the grief following the death of one’s parents, the life-altering birth of a child, the heartbreak of divorce, and the rediscovery of love. Told using a correspondingly tumultuous blend of singular and combined imagery, personal notes, collages, and ephemera, the book captures the bittersweet realities of an individual life while reflecting on the universal, inescapable comings and goings that shape us and the ways we grow to understand ourselves. Familiar from celebrated works such as Rich and Poor (1985), Raised by Wolves (1995) and Open See (2009), Goldberg’s visual language employs sequence and narrative with a feverish intensity. History, memory, and imagination collide in a vividly material practice to which the influences of fiction and film, and the book form itself, are central. Coming and Going offers a fierce, vulnerable, and at times overwhelming account of a life and a search for the elusive universals of experience – an achievement that constitutes Goldberg’s masterwork and a significant contribution to contemporary bookmaking."A brand new, most handsome example of the 2023 MACK first printing of this spectacular undertaking aditionally SIGNED "Jim Goldberg" in ink.
