Fine/No Jacket - As Issued.. np + np (18 + 20pp), 1 b&w illustration. Text in English. "In his conceptual photography project "107th Street Watts", Edgar Arceneaux follows a desire to produce a number of strong visual counter-arcs to a relentlessly mediated social space, as well as a desire to ignite a critique of the narrow histories of Los Angeles' provocative past. Expanding the traditional subjects of Southern California artistic practice, the artist photographed an area of the world known through a singular event in its history: the Watts Riots of 1965. Performing the type of clinical overlay of the street in the manner of Ed Ruscha and his well-known 1966 mapping of the Sunset Strip, "107th Street Watts" formally mimics Ruscha's piece by shooting every building on 107th Street (the location of the historic Watts Towers) in a photomontage across one accordion-folded sheet, allowing for it to be opened and pulled completely out for an undisturbed viewing from end to end". Housed in the publisher's glossy white unprinted slipcase, there is a second, companion volume containing essays by Malik Charles Gaines, Lynell George and Vincent Johnson. When a similar booking did not materialize at The University of Arizona, Warhol was contacted by Tucson's Cinema I Film Society at the JCC, and an event was hastily set up. To publicize the appearance, two different posters using Warhol's portrait were quickly pasted up, printed, and posted by the Film Society members around town. A most handsome example of this near-unique item - the larger of the two - acquired directly from a Society member additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Andy Warhol" in red ink at the event across the face of the poster showing just a bit of light wear and age-toning to the white of the sheet. This collection of darkly humorous and melancholy portraits and landscapes date from the early 1990s when the American photographer was moving between these two cities. With their bluesy rock 'n' roll and mesmerizing off and onstage presence, the Stones redefined the music of the 1960s and 1970s, and paved the way for rock as we know it today. They also set the standard for how a rock band should look and behave. Produced in close collaboration with the band, this book charts the Stones' remarkable history and outrageously cool lifestyle in over five hundred pages of incredible images and illustrations - many previously unseen, by the likes of David Bailey, Peter Beard, Cecil Beaton, Bob Bonis, Anton Corbijn, Annie Leibovitz, Gered Mankowitz, Helmut Newton, Norman Parkinson, Bent Rej, and Ethan Russell that have been gathered from archives all over the world. Unprecedented access to the Rolling Stones' own archives in New York and London adds an equally extraordinary, more private side to their story.
