Each participant contributed an original twenty-five page, 11 x 8 ½" artwork that would only exist on the printed page - not on a gallery wall. Generally considered to be the first conceptual artists' book, it was originally envisioned as being produced by a Xerox copy machine, however the price for printing the three hundred and sixty-eight page volume proved to financially unworkable, so it was ultimately printed using the offset process. Entitled "True Gold is of the Heart" in a nod to the locale's Gold Rush heritage, the four appeared in support of the San Juan Ridge Taxpayers Association. "The roots of the Taxpayers Association go back to 1972 when a few dozen local residents founded the San Juan Ridge Study Group to explore issues of community concern. Meetings focused on county planning and building department policies, permits and code requirements for owner/builders; fire preparedness; forestry practices; and involvement with the Ridge's public schools. In 1975 the group founded the SJRTA, whose membership includes residents and non-resident landowners of the San Juan Ridge and other concerned citizens." Both Snyder and Ginsberg maintained residences nearby, and were supporters of the Association and its ideals. This is a collection of sixty pieces of printed documentation on the work of the pioneering late Contemporary Native American artist Fritz Scholder. It consists of two paperbound books (the 1972 Smithsonian monograph "Indians" and the 1975 Northland Press survey of Scholder's own photographs, "Indian Kitsch: The Use and Misuse of Indian Images"), fourteen exhibition catalogues issued between 1972 and 1991, fourteen slender print prospectuses (including Tamarind's "Indians Forever" and Mourlot's "Indian in Paris" which include loose miniature reproductions) and gallery exhibition brochures from 1971 and 1987, twenty-three larger folded exhibition announcements from 1976 to 1992, six postcard announcements, and a 1976 issue of 3M's "Where: A Travelaide Publication" for Phoenix that features the painting "Sitting Indian" on the front cover. "Controversial and prolific, Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) embraced paradox. An enrolled member of the Luiseno tribe, he often said he was not Indian. Scholder's works were immediately recognized for their insight and powerful commentary on publicly held stereotypes of Native Americans and propelled Scholder into a position of prominence as an artist. His revolutionary paintings broke away from stereotypical roles and forever changed the concept of "Indian artist". This group of documentary materials gives great insight to Scholder's work and exhibition activities of the seventies and eighties - including a wealth of items from the artist's primary galleries of the period including Elaine Horwitch Galleries, Marilyn Butler Fine Art, Jack O' Grady Galleries, Tally Richards, Gallery 10, Louis Newman, and Gerald Peters. This is an amazing unique vintage fan art poster produced by the beloved late Twentynine Palms-based artist Noble Richardson to celebrate the 1967 appearance of Arthur Lee's Love at Santa Monica teen hotspot, The Cheetah. Then a nineteen year old student at Los Angeles' Mt. San Antonio College, Richardson created this vibrant piece utilizing tempera and colored markers employing lettering inspired by the burgeoning San Francisco psychedelic poster scene. The actual concert was promoted by popular LA top 40 "Boss Radio" station 93 KHJ disc jockey "Humble Harve" Miller, and presented headliners Love preceded by Iron Butterfly, and The Chambers Brothers (misspelled here as "Chamber Bros."). The Cheetah was located next to Santa Monica's POP (Pacific Ocean Park) Amusement Park and had a distinctive logo featuring a bright pink Cheetah with the face and breasts of a young woman, a copy of which has been collaged to the lower left corner. A most presentable example of this one-of-a-kind original artwork showing some minor creases, a dozen pinholes, and some minor water spotting across its face. Wrote "The New York Times" that November, "Running on a platform of immediate withdrawal from Vietnam and support of the Black liberation movement. Eldridge Cleaver can present the only electoral challenge to the discreditable politics of Nixon, Humphrey, and Wallace." "Food" was conceived as a vibrant yet inexpensive oasis where the local artistic community (which included neighbors 112 Greene Street, Avalanche Magazine, Phillip Glass, etc.) would be able to dine, drink, and exchange ideas. It became "a creative environment where artists were guest chefs, films were made, dancers performed, and art was discussed, inspired and produced". Best known as one half of the Manhattan cabaret performing duo Wallowitch and Ross, his songs have been recorded by the likes of Tony Bennett, Blossom Dearie, Dixie Carter, Doc Severinson, and many others. He was also the brother of the late photographer Ed Wallowitch, a confidant and early Factory assistant to Andy Warhol. Art directed by noted New York designer Irwin Rosenhouse, Warhol collaged a series of photobooth images for its cover that capture the suited Wallowitch from his chest up to his mouth, cutting off any other identifying facial features (as well as making a non-issue of the pianist's baldness). The recordings consist of twelve show tunes and standards including "Swanee", "I'll Remember April", "Fly Me to the Moon", and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco".  The jacket is stamped "Stereo" on the verso in black ink, and is remarkably clean and fresh. A bright, most handsome example of this uncommon, early Andy Warhol item (entry number twenty-six in Paul Marechal's "Andy Warhol: The Record Covers 1949-1987 - Catalogue Raisonné," and cited on page 48 of Guy Schraenen's "Vinyl: Records and Covers by Artists") that predates his "The Velvet Underground And Nico" album cover by two years.
