YOSHITOMO NARA: PINACOTECA
(NARA, YOSHITOMO) Text by Simon Reynolds, Stephanie Rosenthal. Pace Publishing, I00220908. 2022. 10 x 12 inches, 112 Pages. Hardcover. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
Recent works and a gorgeously crafted miniature gallery from the much-loved Japanese artist
From the outset of his career, Japanese painter and sculptor Yoshitomo Nara (born 1959) has fruitfully explored the relationship between art and the space in which it is placed. At the cornerstone of Nara's recent exhibition in Pace's London gallery was the most recent product of his ongoing study: a new multiroom installation that was reworked from an earlier project titled London Mayfair House.
Borrowing its title from the Ancient Greco-Roman term for a public art salon, Pinacoteca (2021) is a specially crafted, tiny, homelike structure that imitates an exhibition space. On the internal walls, the artist hung new paintings on wood and canvas as well as drawings on paper, used envelopes and cardboard boxes. On the external walls, which have been directly painted onto, Nara hung new paintings that are stylistically simpler and more graphic than the works inside the installation.
Yoshitomo Nara: Pinacoteca presents a close look at the structure, as well as the artist’s recent paintings, sculpture and works on cardboard also displayed in the exhibition. An essay by acclaimed music writer Simon Reynolds explores the relationship of music to Nara’s artistic production, and an essay by curator Stephanie Rosenthal dives deep into the role of built environments in the artist's oeuvre. 9781948701556 Inventory Number: I00220908 -

TIM NOBLE AND SUE WEBSTER: THE JOY OF SEX
(NOBLE, TIM + WEBSTER, SUE). Noble, Tim, Sue Webster, Mark Fletcher & Tina Kim. Seoul, SOUTH KOREA: Kukje Gallery, 2005. First Edition. Small 4to. Illustrated Boards. Artists' Book. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 100pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Herman Lelie and Stefania Bonelli. Text in English and Korean. "Tim Noble and Sue Webster have created a remarkable group of anti-monuments in their eleven-year career, mixing the strategies of modern sculpture and the attitude of punk to make art from anti-art. They sculpt piles of street rubbish, studio debris, and taxidermied animals into astonishing representations of life with "real" shadows of the artists themselves hovering over their accumulations of discarded objects. These abstract forms mysteriously reverse the abstraction into figuration". Published in conjunction with their 2005 Kukje Gallery exhibition "The Joy of Sex", bad boy and girl Noble and Webster have created an artists' book that drolly appropriates fellow Brit Dr. Alex Comfort's best-selling 1972 instruction manual of the same title by substituting their own images rendered in a similar mundane illustrative style as the graphically coupling couple. "Composed of his characteristically simplified lines and shapes, Julian Opie's portraits are rendered through computer technology. Beginning with a photograph scanned into a computer, the artist uses software to edit the images and hone in on their graphic essentials. The fascinating results become icons that serve to identify the individuals with the least information possible. Whereas most of Opie's portraits feature unknowns, some commissioned works feature public figures like Blur, Kate Moss or Michael Schumacher. By identifying them in the titles only by their first names and occupations, Opie zaps these celebrities of their fame and mythic status, simplifying them down to the familiar, human shape of their faces.
