JOSEP RENAU: FOTOMONTADOR
(RENAU, JOSEP). Fontcuberta, Joan & Pablo Ortiz Monasterio. Mexico City, MEXICO: Coleccion Rio De Luz / Fondo De Cultura Economica, 1985. First Edition 1/3000. 4to. Illustrated Wrappers. Artist Monograph. Fine.. 72pp, 50 color illustrations. Text in Spanish. Designed by Peggy Espinosa. Published as part of Fondo De Cultura Economica's notable Pablo Ortiz Monasterio curated photography series "Coleccion Rio De Luz", this is a lovely monograph devoted entirely to the satirical political photomontages of Spaniard Josep Renau. Beginning with his Communist Party poster designs of the wartime era, this is a tour de force on the par with the work of John Heartfield, primarily lampooning the United States and its preoccupation with sex, death consumerism, colonialism, racism, and Cold War era brinksmanship with the Soviet Union. A brand new, most handsome example of this uncommon gem (cited on page 116 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II" and page 19 of Horacio Fernandez' "The Latin American Photobook" - even though Renau was an artist and not a photographer!). VARIOUSVIRGINS: DEVIATIONS IN SPACE BY JASON RHOADES - A UNIQUE ISTALLATION MANUAL HAND-ASSEMBLED BY THE ARTIST
(RHOADES, JASON). Rhoades, Jason. NP. ND (Circa 1997).: NP (Self-Published). First Edition. 8vo. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers. Artist's Book. Very Good.. np (22pp), 9 b&w illustrations + color covers. "VARIOUSVIRGINS: Deviations in Space" is a slender twenty-two page artist's book likely produced by Jason Rhoades in conjunction with his 1997 installation entitled "Deviations in Space, Various Virgins" exhibited at New York's David Zwirner Gallery. In it, the iconoclastic late Los Angeles-based artist definies a number of terms incorporating the word "version" - from "aversion" to "universion" - before elaborating upon the piece's references, background, and sculptural components. It is an intensely smart publication that reveals the work's inspiration in both Pasadena's notorious rocket propulsion pioneer-turned-Majick acolyte Jack Whiteside Parsons and the artistic practice of Franz West! As a bonus, it also reproduces Rhoades' astrological natal chart. Low-budget and chaotic like so many of his installations, this was almost certainly hand-assembled and staple-bound by Rhoades himself at his Inglewood studio using the artist's trusty Canon multi-cartridge color duplicator. A most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon, possibly unique document showing some trivial dampstaining along the top edge of the last few pages. Inventory Number: 026501

GEORGE RICKEY: THE EARLY WORKS
(RICKEY, GEORGE). Davidson III, Maxwell. Altglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 2004. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Dust Jacket. Artist Monograph. As New/As New. 288pp, 382 color and b&w illustrations. With a chronology, exhibition history and bibliography. "George Rickey's importance to the art world is belied by the lack of literature about one of the world's most accomplished kinetic sculptors. His fascinating sculptural oeuvre spans a fifty-three-year working period (1949-2002) and is incredibly diverse. This book is concerned exclusively with the early indoor sculptures from the first twenty-five years of George Rickey's output. With three hundred and eighty-two color and black & white photographs covering the artist's early innovations, we get an intimate and complete picture of his artistic diversity. This book lays a firm foundation to an understanding of Rickey's creative intentions, and carefully categorizes the works into thirty-eight stylistically diverse chapters. Many of these works are published here for the first time". A pristine copy.
