MICKALENE THOMAS ARTIST'S MULTIPLE: SET OF FOUR DECORATIVE MELAMINE TRAYS
(THOMAS, MICKALENE). Thomas, Mickalene. Santa Monica, CA: Mickalene Thomas & The Santa Monica Museum of Art, 2012. First Edition 1/250. Oblong Folio. Four Melamine Trays in a Box. Artist's Multiple. As New. Four 11 x 14" Melamine trays housed in a 12 x 15 x 3" paper over boards box. "Mickalene Thomas has won acclaim for her elaborate, colorful paintings of African-American women, often posed provocatively against rich, 1970s-themed backgrounds adorned with rhinestones, enamel and acrylics. Thomas draws from earlier traditions of portraiture to arrive at her contemporary sensibility. She engages with the tension between a personal investigation of eroticism, black femininity and beauty and a pop-cultural critique of the overt sexual imagery prevalent in the media - from Blaxploitation film heroines like Cleopatra Jones to the construction of middle-class, African-American taste in Ebony magazine." In conjunction with her 2012 "Mickalene Thomas: The Origin of the Universe" retrospective held at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the noted Brooklyn-based artist created a limited edition multiple in the form of four Melamine serving trays that were sold in the SMMoA's "Gracie" shop as a fundraiser. Published in an unsigned edition of two hundred and fifty smartly-boxed sets, each of the four oval trays reproduces a different striking abstract pattern and bears Ms. Thomas' signature in facsimile on a molded cartouche on the underside. A brand new, pristine example of Mickalene Thomas' fabulous utilitarian objects sure to lend a touch of festive class to any home decor or gathering whose components are still sealed in their original plastic sleeves and accompanied by the Museum's individually numbered certificate of authenticity. UTAMARO: NO UTAMAKURA / UTAMAKURA: SECRET PRINTS BY UTAMARO

This is a monograph on the renowned Japanese Ukiyo-E master Kitagawa Utamaro's Late Eighteenth Century erotic masterpiece "UtaMakura (Poem of the Pillow)". Reproduced here are the original twelve color woodblock prints as full page hand-tipped color plates, with one small quirk. Published in 1970, in keeping with Japan's then strict censorship laws the scenes depicting exposed genitalia have each been photographed with an orange rice-paper square covering the offending area. All of the reproductions of the explicitly graphic Shunga throughout suffer from the same fate. Still, this is obviously a very detailed and scholarly study of Utamaro's erotic prints. A most handsome example of the book itself limited to five hundred unnumbered copies showing repairs to the hinges inside the boards with archival linen tape along with some mild overall wear to the publisher's printed cardboard slipcase. DON VAN VLIET: RIDING SOME KIND OF UNUSUAL SKULL SLEIGH - DELUXE SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED ETCHING
(VAN VLIET, DON aka CAPTAIN BEEFHEART) (CORBIJN, ANTON). Van Vliet, Don, Jan Van Vliet, Anton Corbijn & Ben Watson. Los Angeles: Artist Ink Editions, 2003. First Edition 1/1500 Deluxe. 4to. Linen Over Boards, Slipcased. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jackets - As Issued. 88 + 96pp, 1 audio CD + 1 DVD, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Tim Eames. "Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visual artist before he was a musician. As a young child he drew serious accolades for his animal sculptures and was offered a scholarship to study in Europe. His parents declined; and while continuing to create in the visual medium, he turned his attention to music, within ten years forming the first incarnation of the legendary experimental outfit Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. The following fifteen years are music history. But in 1983 Van Vliet retired from music to pursue painting and drawing, the focus of this extraordinary boxed set. "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (named after a painting the artist completed in 1987) provides an opportunity to own one of his original, signed color etchings. Executed on paper and cataloged as "Untitled (Self-Portrait)", the work measures 6 5/8 x 9 ½". The paper itself measures 7 7/8 x 10 ½". Van Vliet produced only 1,500 copies of the piece, one for each individually numbered copy of this Artist Ink Edition. A deluxe 9 ¼ x 12 ¾ x 2 ¾" slipcase carefully houses the etching as well as two museum-quality books, a CD, and a DVD. The first book, entitled "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (88 pages), is a monograph of sorts, containing an essay by art historian Ben Watson and full-color reproductions of sixty of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings - some of them previously unpublished. The second book, entitled "Splinters" (96 pages), features portrait photos of the artist by Anton Corbijn, along with a selection of personal archival material supplied by Don and Jan Van Vliet - including family snapshots, newspaper clippings, drawings, and sketches. None of this material has heretofore been seen. The CD features the artist reading eleven of his previously unreleased spoken-word pieces spanning 1977-1999, which are also reprinted in the Splinters book. The DVD features "Some YoYo Stuff", a 1994 filmed observation by Anton Corbijn. "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh is available only as an individually numbered limited edition of 1,500 copies". A brand new, pristine example of this remarkable undertaking still sealed in the publisher's original shipping carton. 0-7379-0284-1 Inventory Number: 027723

RACE HATRED ON TRIAL
(WALKER, RYAN). Communist Party of the United States of America. Foreword by Jim Allen. New York: Daily Worker Publishing Company, 1931. First Edition. 12mo. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Civil Rights Document. Good -.. 48pp, 3 b&w illustrations + cover illustration. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. According to this publication's authors, "The trial of August Yokinen before 1,500 white and black workers in Harlem for acts clearly based on race prejudice was an event without example in the history of the American Labor Movement. He was not tried before any court of American ruling-class "justice." He was tried by a court of workers." Written and published by The Communist Party of the United States of America, "Race Hatred on Trial" is the transcript and summation of the 1931 Party-sponsored adjudication of Mr. Yokinen for his inhospitable treatment of three Negro workers attending a Finnish Workers Club entertainment in Harlem. As prefaced here, "the seriousness of the crime he committed against the working class is made clear in this pamphlet." To atone for his transgressions following the tribunal's guilty verdict, Yokinen was immediately expelled from the Communist Party and required to "actively participate in the struggle against white chauvinism throughout Harlem." An internally most presentable example of the uncommon 1931 first edition of this notable pre-World War II contribution to civil rights literature that includes four illustrations by leftist American political activist and cartoonist Ryan Walker showing pronounced wear, creasing, chipping, soiling, and minor paper loss to the extremities of its brittle newsprint covers; which appear to have at one point detached along the spine and been subsequently semi-artfully re-attached. It has been priced accordingly. Inventory Number: 026735

THIS IS JOHN WALLOWITCH!!! VINYL LP - WITH A PHOTOBOOTH COLLAGE COVER BY ANDY WARHOL
(WARHOL, ANDY) (WALLOWITCH, JOHN). Wallowitch, John. New York. ND (1964).: Serenus Records Corp.. First Edition. Large Square 4to. LP in Illustrated Album Cover. Fine/Fine. One black vinyl long-playing phonograph record in a plain paper inner-sleeve, inside a 12 x 12" album cover printed black and white offset recto, and two color offset verso. Design by Irwin Rosenhouse. Cover Photograph by Andy Warhol. This is the very first recording issued by the late pianist, composer and lyricist John Wallowitch. Best known as one half of the Manhattan cabaret performing duo Wallowitch and Ross, his songs have been recorded by the likes of Tony Bennett, Blossom Dearie, Dixie Carter, Doc Severinson, and many others. He was also the brother of the late photographer Ed Wallowitch, a confidant and early Factory assistant to Andy Warhol. Art directed by noted New York designer Irwin Rosenhouse, Warhol collaged a series of photobooth images for its cover that capture the suited Wallowitch from his chest up to his mouth, cutting off any other identifying facial features (as well as making a non-issue of the pianist's baldness). The recordings consist of twelve show tunes and standards including "Swanee", "I'll Remember April", "Fly Me to the Moon", and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". The jacket is stamped "Stereo" on the verso in black ink, and is remarkably clean and fresh. A bright, most handsome example of this uncommon, early Andy Warhol item (entry number twenty-six in Paul Marechal's "Andy Warhol: The Record Covers 1949-1987 - Catalogue Raisonné," and cited on page 48 of Guy Schraenen's "Vinyl: Records and Covers by Artists") that predates his "The Velvet Underground And Nico" album cover by two years. PLEASE NOTE: The album's catalogue number SEP 2005 printed prominently on the rear cover has led some less well-versed observers to speculate that this is a reprint issued in September of the year 2005. It is not. It is the first - and only vinyl issue - released in 1964. Inventory Number: 027217
