"Between 2017 and 2021 artist Doug Aitken presented his site-specific installation entitled “Mirage” in the California desert outside Palm Springs, at a defunct Detroit bank, and nestled in the Swiss Alps. “Mirage” takes the form of a ranch-style suburban American house whose exterior is entirely clad in reflective mirrored surfaces that camouflage it in landscapes far removed from the familiar lawn and picket fence. The book is an immersive chronicle of the three installations, featuring photographs, architectural drawings, and other materials related to the project accompanied by a text by Neville Wakefield as well as an interview with the artist. Published collaboratively by The LUMA Foundation, JRP | Editions, and Zolo Press, and handmade with cold foils, silver printing, an exposed spine, and bound as a leporello, this extraordinary document is a tour de force of the bookmaker’s art."

"In 1964, a young Steve Banks bought one of the most coveted ‘Muscle Cars’ on the market - a Pontiac GTO with a four-speed stick and a Hurst shifter, Tri-Power, and three Rochester 2G carburetors. He then drove Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to begin his new advertising agency job. Gassing up one day after arriving at Nobo’s Shell station at Beverly and Larchmont, Banks learned that Nobo had previously been head mechanic at the Courtesy Chevrolet dealership, and that his station had become a center for building and tuning street racers. On and off over the next few months, Banks would leave his car at the garage while Nobo fine-tuned the carburetors, replaced the stock tires, torsion, and sway bars, and added Koni shocks and a Sun tachometer. Next, he taught Banks how to ‘speed shift’ while making late night runs up and down Larchmont Boulevard. One day, Nobo mentioned he was going to a drag race that Saturday, and that Banks was welcome to come along. Witnessing his first drag race, Steve Banks was immediately hooked. He returned the following Saturday, and the next, and again the next; but this time with his cameras. Over the course of two years, Banks photographed guys preparing runs, the thundering nitro-burning dragsters launching down the strip at two hundred-plus miles per hour, and everything else that moved. Today, fifty years later, the sport of drag racing is a big bucks, corporate-sponsored television broadcast business with the NHRA sporting over two hundred different drag racing classes. However, in a nod to the sport’s modest beginnings, almost every weekend from coast-to-coast one can find "nostalgia racing" events preserving the dragster culture of the 1960s captured here in NITRO, Drag Racing In The Sixties: 1964-1966." This seventh installment of "Semina" - Wallace Berman's legendary, and legendarily scarce handmade literary and art periodical - is subtitled "Aleph". Published in Larkspur in 1961, unlike its predecessors that anthologized work from the movers and shakers of the West Coast Beat scene, this number is entirely devoted entirely to contributions by Berman himself. It is comprised of eighteen loose reproductions of photographs, drawings, and text - many of which combine these elements. A complete, internally handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item limited to two hundred unnumbered copies. The eleven photographic reproductions on cardstock are bright and fresh, while several of the text pieces printed on matte paper show typical minor soiling, offsetting, and age-toning. The printed white pocket into which these are gathered is still securely affixed to the inside rear cover. Externally, the title pastedown on the front cover shows some mild rubbing and foxing, and the brittle, highly acidic chipboard covers have light overall wear, age-toning, and soiling. More notably, the covers have separated cleanly along the length of the spine, and there are two triangular chips of paper loss along the bottom edge - one on the rear at the heel of the spine, and a tiny one at the foredge front corner. Both detached fragments are present, and we have decided to let the next owner deal with their preferences for any paper restoration. All in all, this is a most presentable copy of a truly remarkable Wallace Berman item that looks far nicer in hand than it describes that has been priced accordingly. Inventory Number: 026125

Gregory Bojorquez was born in Los Angeles in 1972. He started photographing in his teens, and set about documenting the subjects and stories that interested him personally. The intimate images he captured in East L.A. were not the product of structured photo sessions or assignments. They were shot from the perspective of a young man hanging out with friends and neighbors. In the late 1980s Gregory began photographing for the L.A. Weekly and was added as a staff photographer. Assignments for magazines and commercial work for major record labels naturally followed. His portraits of personalities such as Snoop Dogg and Mike Tyson appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone and For His magazine. In 1999 Gregory became instrumental in the early beginnings of DUB Magazine where he was brought on as Photo Editor and a feature photographer for a period of more than seven years. Since that time, Gregory's photographs have been exhibited internationally in gallery shows, museum exhibitions, and art fairs including Photo London, Paris Photo, and Art Düsseldorf. His work is represented by Galerie Bene Taschen in Koln, and by Little Big Man in Los Angeles; who has published this spectacular volume.
