CHILDS NEW YORK RESTAURANT: A GROUP OF THREE LAVISHLY PRODUCED 1930 PROJECT DOCUMENTATION ALBUMS FROM PRUITT & BROWN ARCHITECTS
(CHILDS RESTAURANT). Pruitt & Brown Architects. New York: Pruitt & Brown Architects, 1930. First Editions. Folio. Gilt-Stamped Buckram. Architecture Monographs. Near Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 36pp + 48pp + 72pp, each profusely illustrated with original 7 ¼ x 9 ½" photographs and contemporary publication clippings. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. This is a group of three unique, lavishly hand-assembled 14 x 12 ½" project documentation books produced in 1930 by Pruitt & Brown Architects to showcase their design work for recently opened showpieces for the Childs Restaurant chain. Founded in New York in the 1880s, Childs became one of the first national dining chains, with over one hundred venues at its height. The firm's ownership changed hands just as the US slipped into the Great Depression, and Childs optimistically opened a series of elegant Manhattan dining establishments each differentiated by a distinct architectural theme presented as if one were stepping onto a glamorous Hollywood back lot set. These hefty volumes have been produced in the manner of a scrapbook with original sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs by the Peyser & Patzig firm affixed to thick linen-hinged pages throughout liberally supplemented by menus, correspondence, and newspaper, magazine, and press coverage of the projects. The first is devoted to the Childs Restaurant at 425 Lexington Avenue which was a jaw-dropping showpiece of Art Deco elegance. The second covers Childs "Old England" at 9 East 40th Street, which presented a Robin Hood-like décor. The third - and most comprehensive of these books - details William Child's "Old Algiers" at 102nd Street and Broadway, which simulated an exotic night at the Kasbah. The three are bound in differing hues of buckram over boards with still-bright gilt-stamped titles on their front covers and spines. Each is internally in Fine condition, and bears a typed label on the inside front board noting that the volume was issued by the Pruitt & Brown Architects office at 342 Madison Avenue for use at the firm's Charlottesville, VA office. The exteriors show varying degrees of wear, rubbing, and some light discoloration, but are still sound and in no way detract from the remarkable contents. These are stunning, near-unique documents of another time, place, and dining experience that must be seen in hand to be fully appreciated. GALERIE HALF: SELECTED WORKS / SPACES
(GALERIE HALF). Smith, Cameron. Introduction by Rosa Park. Foreword by Kathe Clements and Tommy Clements. Photography by Shade Degges. Paris, France: Flammarion, I00240217. 2023. First Edition. 12 1/2 x 9 1/2", 4to. Cloth with Pasterdown. Design Monograph. New/No Jacket - As Issued. 342pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English. "A favorite purveyor to the Los Angeles design cognoscenti, Galerie Half is imbued with a sense of timeless imperfection. Pieces from disparate design traditions converge seamlessly in a single room: a bleached Gustavian daybed is flanked by a Roman statue, a Venetian mirror reflects African masks, and a rustic farmhouse table is framed by caned chairs. Galerie Half is talented at constructing such diverse compositions. A vivid hue can create synchronicity between the timeworn patina of a glazed terracotta planter and the softened leather of an Advocat and Press chair by Le Corbusier–Pierre Jeanneret. A monochromatic palette of contrasting textures can ground a room, creating harmony between luxurious and humble materials, or signed and anonymous designs. Similarly, complementary shapes can provide balance—the horizontal stripes on a Finnish floor lamp echo those in Marcel Breuer’s 1932 armchair, and the seductive curve of Carlo Mollino’s Suora lamp mimics that of Rick Owens’s marble stool. The genius of Galerie Half and the celebrity homes that they have appointed lies in this artful curation of individual elements with soul.". A brand new, most handsome example of this exquisite document photographed by Shade Degges that does poetic justice to the refined aesthetic bent of one of Los Angeles' treasures. 978-2-08-042724-3 Inventory Number: I000240217

"Kristen Morgin lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work, which is formed with a mixture of clay, glue, cement and other media, comes from a ceramic background but goes far beyond traditional uses of the medium. Her sculptures have an affinity to the constructions of George Herms, Edward Kienholz, and Michael McMillen, but evoke relics of contemporary culture that may have been buried and unearthed at a later date. Toys, books, comics and other objects are rendered true to scale in unfired clay and recall the artist’s childhood. Corroding surfaces evoke mortality, decay and the passage of time. Eccentric narratives and playful juxtapositions come together to form new objects with unexpected connotations."
A brand new, pristine example of this newly published, elegantly designed comprehensive hardbound monograph featuring a lengthy transcribed interview with the artist by her gallerist, Marc Selwyn, that is additionally SIGNED BY THE ARTIST WITH A SMALL DRAWING AT THE REAR COLOPHON.

"Los Angeles’s Tim Street-Porter has been chronicling this metropolis’s architecture and interiors for over twenty-five years. This stunning collection of inspiring homes begins with a look back, which includes examples of iconic houses inspired by Hollywood film fantasies, Modernist residences by such luminaries as John Lautner, and Frank Gehry’s Deconstructivism-style home. The heart of the book features today’s forward-looking homes, divided into two sections: Living with Art and Design and Los Angeles Modern. Antiquarian Joel Chen artfully blends an eye-catching collection of period furniture and Chinese objets while interior designer Jean-Louis Denoit’s house sparkles with a Tony Duquette gilded mirror and an abalone shell chandelier. Another trend is the renovation of modernist houses with a personal touch. Artist Mary Weatherford’s reworking of her A. Quincy Jones–designed home, in collaboration with designer Oliver Furth, has a striking orange bedroom. Illuminating Los Angeles’s dramatic indoor-outdoor living spaces, this tome is a must-have for architecture and design enthusiasts." 208pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Simon Johnston. "In the mid-century era of TV dinners and suburban conformity, Russel and Mary Wright were individualists. Their home Dragon Rock at Manitoga is situated on forested woodlands, sited at an abandoned quarry located an hour north of New York City, now part of the Historic Artists' Homes and Studios program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Although best known for American Modern dinnerware, the Wrights rejected rigid modernism for a life that invited ambiguity. Mary's role as a partner, designer, and entrepreneur is explored here for the first time. This lavish volume is filled with personal histories and over one hundred stunning photographs, synthesizing multiple archives and charting the innovation of their design practice, their lives, and the development of their Dragon Rock home and the Woodland Paths of Manitoga."
