The amalgam of anonymous and vernacular seaside studies abutting the likes of Don James and Tom Blake's historical views from the shore produced a joyous and sophisticated body of work, which has yet to be reproduced in book form. The photographs have been mounted on heavy art paper and hand-bound by Bjorn's Bokbinderi of Roa, Norway in titled cloth-covered boards. In recent correspondence with the photographer about the book, Mr. Alveng shared that while "New York" was supposed to be an edition of twenty copies, far fewer were actually printed and bound, and that this is likely the only one in existence outside his studio. "In 1964, a young Steve Banks bought one of the most coveted ‘Muscle Cars’ on the market - a Pontiac GTO with a four-speed stick and a Hurst shifter, Tri-Power, and three Rochester 2G carburetors. He then drove Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to begin his new advertising agency job. Gassing up one day after arriving at Nobo’s Shell station at Beverly and Larchmont, Banks learned that Nobo had previously been head mechanic at the Courtesy Chevrolet dealership, and that his station had become a center for building and tuning street racers. On and off over the next few months, Banks would leave his car at the garage while Nobo fine-tuned the carburetors, replaced the stock tires, torsion, and sway bars, and added Koni shocks and a Sun tachometer. Next, he taught Banks how to ‘speed shift’ while making late night runs up and down Larchmont Boulevard. One day, Nobo mentioned he was going to a drag race that Saturday, and that Banks was welcome to come along. Witnessing his first drag race, Steve Banks was immediately hooked. He returned the following Saturday, and the next, and again the next; but this time with his cameras. Over the course of two years, Banks photographed guys preparing runs, the thundering nitro-burning dragsters launching down the strip at two hundred-plus miles per hour, and everything else that moved. Today, fifty years later, the sport of drag racing is a big bucks, corporate-sponsored television broadcast business with the NHRA sporting over two hundred different drag racing classes. However, in a nod to the sport’s modest beginnings, almost every weekend from coast-to-coast one can find "nostalgia racing" events preserving the dragster culture of the 1960s captured here in NITRO, Drag Racing In The Sixties: 1964-1966." While visiting Los Angeles, Beard photographed his collaged diaries - incorporating his images of band members Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie and John McVie - in the dirt beside some train tracks, with his hand visible in the bottom left corner in the image. This was traditional amongst the French medical profession, and Calle's father was a physician. Or was he? Each of these cards is housed in a glassine envelope that faces a sequential photographic image printed on vellum of the artist performing a drunken striptease. These images conclude with the naked, comatose Sophie (who "will be a source of joy to her parents") sprawled in a heap. The book is bound as a faux leopard-skin album, which is in turn housed in a paper covered, chipboard box with a printed label. After that you'll find images and text for each of the markers and historical sites as they are installed in twenty-seven countries arranged in order of the unfolding story. Beautifully illustrated by Jim Dine, this is the deluxe edition of author Neil Curry's colloquial version of the closing books of Homer's Odyssey in which he has "scrubbed the story free from all its side-tracks and digressions so as to leave clear one thread of Odysseus's final journey: from the shores of Ithaca to the marriage-bed where he is finally reunited with Penelope". It is hand-printed in 14 point Monotype Baskerville on Canaletto 160gsm (fine) and bound and slipcased by The Fine Bindery. Jim Dine's signed original 12 ½ x 9 ¾" etching of "The Head of Homer" (contained loose in a wallet in the slipcase) was printed on 300gsm Hahnemuhle at the Spring Street Workshop in New York. The lithographic frontispiece and four photogravures bound into the book all reproduce drawings made by the artist in 1987-8 from Greek and Roman statuary at the Glyptotek in Munich, and were printed in London by Pauper's Press and Hope Sufferance Press.
