THE SOFT PORCELAIN OF SEVRES. WITH AN HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION BY EDOUARD GARNIER. ROYAL FOLIO, TEN PARTS, FIVE PLATES IN EACH, FIFTY IN ALL, REPRESENTING TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY WATER-COLOUR SUBJECTS AFTER THE ORIGINALS - 1891 EDITION LIMITED TO 283 COPIES
(SEVRES PORCELAIN). Garnier, Edouard. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891. First American Edition 1/283 Deluxe. 4to. Printed Wrappers. Decorative Arts Monograph. Very Good -.. 32pp + np (8pp), ten printed paper portfolios each containing five 8 ½ x 11 ¾" individual heavy card sheets printed recto only by chromolithography, 250 color illustrations. With an index. This is the 1891 deluxe first American edition of Edouard Garnier's important illustrated survey of the soft porcelain of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres. Limited to two hundred and eighty-three numbered copies, this lavish publication consists of two descriptive text booklets accompanied by ten paper portfolios printed by letterpress each housing five beautiful loose chromolithographic plates - most including stunning gold metallic inks to reproduce the use of gilt in the original ceramic works. These reproduce a total of two hundred and fifty watercolour renderings of significant examples of the mark, including numerous pieces from collections belonging to European royalty and nobility. This example contains all fifty plates along with their individual caption sheets and the publisher's hand-numbered limitation sheet (#5/283). The plates and captions show tiny discreet ink numbers at their corners that in no way detract from the images themselves. Fourteen plates exhibit some insignificant to mild foxing to the versos, however due to the thickness of the paper stock on which they have been printed, only three show a minute trace of spotting on the recto. Several of the paper portfolios have very minor wear, age-patination and soiling; with three bearing some brief ink annotations. All in all this is a bright, most handsome, fully-collated copy of this exceedingly uncommon and lovely reference. Inventory Number: 021477

"As one of the 21st Century's most traveled, acclaimed, and influential fashion photographers, Mario Testino has unsurpassed access to the most magnetic stars of popular culture. For some time now he has been collecting a personal archive of off-screen moments, often snatched spontaneously before, during, and after more official sittings for "Vanity Fair", "Vogue", and Testino's many clients in the world of fashion. The result is a portrait not just of a generation of the most wanted and talked-about, but an invitation to be part of the backstage parties and unstaged moments of Testino's life. Sometimes offbeat, but always on the pulse, "Let Me In!", with Testino's eye for a modern kind of elegance liberated from conventional polish, is a new chapter from the photographer who has already made his mark with the books "Any Objections", "Front Row Backstage", "Alive", "Portraits", "Kids", "Diana Princess of Wales", and numerous exhibitions and publications worldwide". MICKALENE THOMAS ARTIST'S MULTIPLE: SET OF FOUR DECORATIVE MELAMINE TRAYS
(THOMAS, MICKALENE). Thomas, Mickalene. Santa Monica, CA: Mickalene Thomas & The Santa Monica Museum of Art, 2012. First Edition 1/250. Oblong Folio. Four Melamine Trays in a Box. Artist's Multiple. As New. Four 11 x 14" Melamine trays housed in a 12 x 15 x 3" paper over boards box. "Mickalene Thomas has won acclaim for her elaborate, colorful paintings of African-American women, often posed provocatively against rich, 1970s-themed backgrounds adorned with rhinestones, enamel and acrylics. Thomas draws from earlier traditions of portraiture to arrive at her contemporary sensibility. She engages with the tension between a personal investigation of eroticism, black femininity and beauty and a pop-cultural critique of the overt sexual imagery prevalent in the media - from Blaxploitation film heroines like Cleopatra Jones to the construction of middle-class, African-American taste in Ebony magazine." In conjunction with her 2012 "Mickalene Thomas: The Origin of the Universe" retrospective held at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the noted Brooklyn-based artist created a limited edition multiple in the form of four Melamine serving trays that were sold in the SMMoA's "Gracie" shop as a fundraiser. Published in an unsigned edition of two hundred and fifty smartly-boxed sets, each of the four oval trays reproduces a different striking abstract pattern and bears Ms. Thomas' signature in facsimile on a molded cartouche on the underside. A brand new, pristine example of Mickalene Thomas' fabulous utilitarian objects sure to lend a touch of festive class to any home decor or gathering whose components are still sealed in their original plastic sleeves and accompanied by the Museum's individually numbered certificate of authenticity. Linen Over Boards, Slipcased. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jackets - As Issued. 88 + 96pp, 1 audio CD + 1 DVD, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Tim Eames. "Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visual artist before he was a musician. As a young child he drew serious accolades for his animal sculptures and was offered a scholarship to study in Europe. His parents declined; and while continuing to create in the visual medium, he turned his attention to music, within ten years forming the first incarnation of the legendary experimental outfit Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. The following fifteen years are music history. But in 1983 Van Vliet retired from music to pursue painting and drawing, the focus of this extraordinary boxed set. "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (named after a painting the artist completed in 1987) provides an opportunity to own one of his original, signed color etchings. Executed on paper and cataloged as "Untitled (Self-Portrait)", the work measures 6 5/8 x 9 ½". The paper itself measures 7 7/8 x 10 ½". Van Vliet produced only 1,500 copies of the piece, one for each individually numbered copy of this Artist Ink Edition. A deluxe 9 ¼ x 12 ¾ x 2 ¾" slipcase carefully houses the etching as well as two museum-quality books, a CD, and a DVD. The first book, entitled "Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (88 pages), is a monograph of sorts, containing an essay by art historian Ben Watson and full-color reproductions of sixty of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings - some of them previously unpublished. The second book, entitled "Splinters" (96 pages), features portrait photos of the artist by Anton Corbijn, along with a selection of personal archival material supplied by Don and Jan Van Vliet - including family snapshots, newspaper clippings, drawings, and sketches. None of this material has heretofore been seen. The CD features the artist reading eleven of his previously unreleased spoken-word pieces spanning 1977-1999, which are also reprinted in the Splinters book. The DVD features "Some YoYo Stuff", a 1994 filmed observation by Anton Corbijn. "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh is available only as an individually numbered limited edition of 1,500 copies". A brand new, pristine example of this remarkable undertaking still sealed in the publisher's original shipping carton. 0-7379-0284-1 Inventory Number: 027723

For it "Visionaire teamed up with fashion luminary Tom Ford and Gucci on an issue devoted to the theme - Light. This was our most ambitious project to date in terms of content and production. There was a conscious effort on the parts of both Visionaire and Ford to steer clear of fashion and to focus on what we considered to be fine-art images. It introduced a new cast of contributors to the Visionaire fold: artists such as Sam Taylor-Wood, Andreas Gursky, and Christopher Bucklow; art director Peter Saville; animator Hayao Miyazaki; and architect Toyo Ito". The transparencies are housed in an elegant 5 ½ x 15 x 2 ½" sliding black Lucite case affixed with a silver plaque that contains a Lumigraphics light-emitting sheet operating on ten AAA batteries. A brand new, most handsome numbered example (1678/3300) in perfect working order with batteries included of this beautiful object with the transparencies unopened in the publisher's shrinkwrap housed in Visionaire's black, foam-lined packing carton, as issued. VISIONAIRE NO. 15: CINDERELLA
(VISIONAIRE). Gan, Stephen, Cecilia Dean & James Kaliardos, Editors. Text by Glenn O'Brien. New York: Visionaire Publishing, 1995. First Edition 1/2000. 4to. Loose Contents in a Portfolio. Fashion Quarterly. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Gregory Foley and Stephen Gan. Published in an edition of two thousand numbered copies, this is the fifteenth installment of everyone's favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "The theme of this issue was the much-loved-and very fashiony fairy tale ''Cinderella.'' We imagined we were making a film and asking each of the various directors (contributing artists) to shoot a scene. Raymond Meier portrayed Cinderella's ride to the castle and the magical moment when the glass shoe fits. Mats Gustafson transformed the pumpkin into a Rolls Royce. Bruce Weber cast the sexy prince. Our fairy godmother was played by legendary fashion editor Polly Mellen in one scene and by legendary drag queen DJ Lady Bunny in another. The one constant was the shoe, a vintage Roger Vivier for Christian Dior from the archives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was like a game, in which everyone was doing his part, not knowing who else was participating and not knowing how any of the others' images would turn out. Even Glenn O'Brien, who contributed the text, did not see any of the visuals and was only briefed on various segments of the story. Once all the artwork and Glenn's text arrived, like magic, everything fell into place!". A most handsome individually numbered example of this uncommon issue showing the tiniest bit of soiling and sunning to the extremities of the portfolio. Visionaire's own price for this out-of-print back issue is $1,200.00 - when available. Inventory Number: 018311

Published in an edition of one thousand, five hundred copies, this is the seventh installment of everyone's favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "With "Black", Visionaire doubled in size-and also in price. The issue was inspired by the season's all-black Comme des Garcons collection, Edward Gorey's macabre cartoons, and by artist Antoni Tapies. It was about darkness, the night, shadows, and what you may or may not see when you squint your eyes. A traditional artist's portfolio case tied with three black ribbons, provided the concept for the packaging. The die-cut letters were based on tears Stephen had made with scrap paper that enabled, once again, different first pages to peek through the cover". VISIONAIRE NO. 10: THE ALPHABET (WINTER 1993-1994)
(VISIONAIRE). Gan, Stephen, James Kaliardos & Cecilia Dean, Editors. New York: Visionaire Publishing, 1993. First Edition 1/1500. Folio. Loose Plates in a Portfolio. Fashion Quarterly. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. Individual sheets laid into a die-cut printed portfolio, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Gregory Foley. Published in an edition of one thousand, five hundred copies, this is the ninth installment of everyone's favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "Greg Foley, who had been collaborating with us on our cover designs since the day he graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, really went to town with this one. He sliced out every letter he fancied and created one gigantic collage that we then photographed and printed. The concept was exciting: The B from Harper's Bazaar and the V from Vogue could all appear on our cover, along with many other famous typefaces. In the end it even became a kind of guessing game: ''Name that logo.'' The only drawback was that for months after this cover was made, there was not a magazine, phone book, or cereal box in the house that didn't have a hole cut out of it. The holographic metallic foil stamping also made this one of our most memorable covers. As for the contents, we assigned each of the contributing artists a different letter of the alphabet. For the first time, the directions were very specific, but even so, many artists took the challenge and proceeded as if they had been given carte blanche". Its contributors include editor Stephen Gan, Nick Knight, Robert Medvedz, Dovanna Pagowska, Jeffrey Fulvimani, Tim Rollins + K.O.S., Ruben Toledo, Bill Cunningham, Steven Meisel, James Dignan, Steven Klein, James Vance, Kareem Iliya, Bruce Weber, Francois Berthoud, Robert Adams, Stevan Dohan, Michael Capotosto, Miguel Calvo, Florentino J.
