THIS IS JOHN WALLOWITCH!!! VINYL LP - WITH A PHOTOBOOTH COLLAGE COVER BY ANDY WARHOL
(WARHOL, ANDY) (WALLOWITCH, JOHN). Wallowitch, John. New York. ND (1964).: Serenus Records Corp.. First Edition. Large Square 4to. LP in Illustrated Album Cover. Fine/Fine. One black vinyl long-playing phonograph record in a plain paper inner-sleeve, inside a 12 x 12" album cover printed black and white offset recto, and two color offset verso. Design by Irwin Rosenhouse. Cover Photograph by Andy Warhol. This is the very first recording issued by the late pianist, composer and lyricist John Wallowitch. Best known as one half of the Manhattan cabaret performing duo Wallowitch and Ross, his songs have been recorded by the likes of Tony Bennett, Blossom Dearie, Dixie Carter, Doc Severinson, and many others. He was also the brother of the late photographer Ed Wallowitch, a confidant and early Factory assistant to Andy Warhol. Art directed by noted New York designer Irwin Rosenhouse, Warhol collaged a series of photobooth images for its cover that capture the suited Wallowitch from his chest up to his mouth, cutting off any other identifying facial features (as well as making a non-issue of the pianist's baldness). The recordings consist of twelve show tunes and standards including "Swanee", "I'll Remember April", "Fly Me to the Moon", and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". The jacket is stamped "Stereo" on the verso in black ink, and is remarkably clean and fresh. A bright, most handsome example of this uncommon, early Andy Warhol item (entry number twenty-six in Paul Marechal's "Andy Warhol: The Record Covers 1949-1987 - Catalogue Raisonné," and cited on page 48 of Guy Schraenen's "Vinyl: Records and Covers by Artists") that predates his "The Velvet Underground And Nico" album cover by two years. PLEASE NOTE: The album's catalogue number SEP 2005 printed prominently on the rear cover has led some less well-versed observers to speculate that this is a reprint issued in September of the year 2005. It is not. It is the first - and only vinyl issue - released in 1964. Inventory Number: 027217

BRUCE WEBER: ALL-AMERICAN XVII: GLORY BE

As New.. np (200pp), profusely illustrated in duotone and color. Art Director - Nathaniel Kilcer. XXX In this seventeenth edition of his annual arts journal, Bruce Weber considers the wisdom of the experienced and the conviction of the young as a framework for hope in disorienting times. He profiles the veteran stage actor Cherry Jones and the long-time CBS news anchor Bob Schieffer, whose respective careers stand as testaments to personal ingenuity, common sense, and the power of adaptability. The uncommon life of the late philanthropist and entrepreneur Jay Weiss - a pillar of the Miami community - is narrated with humor and candor by two of his daughters, Jennie Weiss Block and Laurie Weiss Nuell. Patti Ragan, the founder of the Center for Great Apes, shares her devotion to primates abandoned by the entertainment industry. In addition to these profiles, Weber presents photo essays devoted to Sergeant James Jensen IV, a decorated Army veteran trying to navigate the return to civilian life, and Marge Winski, the soulful lighthouse keeper who stands watch over Montauk Point on the East End of Long Island, NY. "All-American XVII: Glory Be" is also rich with original commissioned works. Noe Dewitt documents the final days of Saint Anthony, a parochial school in Jersey City, in a story that explores the unique relationship between its celebrated basketball coach, Bob Hurley, and one of his last star players, R.J. Cole. An all-star lineup of contemporary women photographers - Lynda Churilla, Stef Mitchell, Yelena Yemchuk, and Olivia Bee - reflect on the experience of chronicling the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. And Joel Griffith presents a highly personal, contemplative study of The Rockaways - a quiet corner of Queens that mirrors the hopes and contradictions of New York City at large. The journal closes with a heartfelt dedication to Sam Shepard - the celebrated author, playwright and a frequent subject of Weber’s lens". ALL-AMERICAN VOLUME THIRTEEN: BORN READY - A JOURNAL BY BRUCE WEBER
(WEBER, BRUCE). Weber, Bruce, Nan Bush, Nathaniel Kilcer, Matthew Richards & Skylar Pittman, Editors. Kempen, GERMANY & New York: teNeues Publishing Group, 2013. First Edition 1/5000. 4to. Wrappers in Pictorial Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New.. np (192pp), profusely illustrated in duotone and color. Art Director - Nathaniel Kilcer. "The latest volume in Bruce Weber's ongoing literary and art journal series celebrates individuals whose risk-taking and personal vision set them apart from the crowd. There's a common enthusiasm running through this volume, a sense that this cast of characters - be they subjects of the book or contributors to it - was born ready to stand up, face the odds, and declare themselves unabashedly to the world. The book opens with a poem about Basketball by Sherman Alexie. A new commission by Sean Thomas finds him back in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, documenting the teen rites of passage that pile up at the end of high school: senior prom, first romances, lazy summer jobs. Then Bruce Weber's first story in the book is a profile of Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries - the pioneering Los Angeles-based gang intervention and rehabilitation program. From there All-American travels to Harlem with Lisa Eisner, whose commissioned story about Amateur Night at the Apollo becomes a love poem to the vibrant neighborhood. Weber's second contribution is a profile of the charming and eccentric Mickey Wolfson, whose extraordinary collection of furniture, paintings, books, prints, and decorative objects became the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami, Florida. A portfolio of paintings by the Palm Beach society fixture Ralph Wolfe Cowan presents everyone from Doris Duke to Johnny Mathis to Princess Grace in the most ethereal and unexpected light. All-American then traces one woman's personal struggle for justice through exclusive images from the personal archive of Edith Windsor, whose Supreme Court case resulted in the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) earlier this year. This story also features portraits by Bruce Weber and photographs by Poppy De Villeneuve. All-American Volume Thirteen closes with an in-depth look at the world of professional motocross racing. Bruce Weber traveled this summer to Southwick, Massachusetts together with photographers John Scott and Michael John Murphy to capture stars like Ryan Dungey and James Stewart racing against a host of up-and-comers". As with all of the "All-American"s, the quality of the design, paper and printing is impeccable. Not unlike the previous books, there will be only one printing of this title. A brand new, pristine example in slipcase in the publisher's shrinkwrap, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 3-8327-9735-1 Inventory Number: 022862

152pp, illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Lorraine Wild, Green Dragon Office. “The old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” is turned on its side in “Words Don't Mean Much” - Senon Williams’ new book of aphoristic phrasing. Far fewer words are needed to create an illuminating image in the mind’s eye, conjuring immediate multi-sensory experiences. This book of poems is derived from the text in Williams’ ink on paper drawings. The drawings are textual extractions and gather momentum within the book, exhibiting great attention to materials and craftsmanship. Every detail, from select paper to classic typeface, has been considered. An object, not unlike a sculpture, can be viewed from all sides, handled - and leafed through in the case of this book - front to back, back to front, or randomly opened. “Words Don't Mean Much” is a small pocket book, easy to conceal. A book to keep all to yourself or share intimately.”
Los Angeles native Senon Williams is a lifelong artist and musician. A founding member of the always-engaging Dengue Fever, Williams’ visual work finds space in the natural, exposing outstanding and devastating stages of human evolution. “To provoke thought, a question works better than answers. EX LIBRIS CATALOG: WORDS-IN-FREEDOM - DRAWINGS OF THE ITALIAN FUTURSTS
Cohen, Arthur A. & Luce Marinetti. New York: Ex Libris & Prakapas Gallery, 1985. First Edition. 4to. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers. Exhibition Catalog. Very Good.. np (20pp), 16 b&w illustrations. Designed by Tamar Cohen. New York's Arthur Cohen was the premier purveyor of books and ephemera on twentieth century Modern Art movements for nearly twenty years. Ex Libris' copiously researched, scholarly, illustrated catalogues stood as unparalleled bibliographic tools at a time when there was a paucity of available reference to the documentary literature of the modernist avant-gardes. This slender publication was the catalogue for a 1985 exhibition held concurrently at Ex Libris and Prakapas Gallery of Italian Futurist works on paper by Fidele Azari, Emilio Buccafusca, Mario Carli, Francesco Cangiullo, Pasqualino Cangiullo, Luciano De Nardis, Ugo Giannattasio, F.T. Marinetti, Angelo Rognoni, and Lucio Vernna (Landsmann). A most presentable example of this uncommon ephemeral item that was the only printed documentation of the event showing some light soiling and handling creases to its rear cover. 101 ESSENTIAL ROCK RECORDS: THE GOLDEN AGE OF VINYL FROM THE BEATLES TO THE SEX PISTOLS - FIRST PAPERBOUND EDITION SIGNED BY AUTHOR JEFF GOLD
Gold, Jeff & Gene Sculatti. Berkeley & Los Angeles, CA: Gingko Press & Kill Your Idols, 2016. First Paperbound Edition. 4to. Pictorial Paperback. Music Monograph. As New.. 260pp, 443 color illustrations. Jeff Gold's "101 Essential Rock Records..." is a tribute to the vinyl album and celebrates one hundred and one of rock’s most influential records - from The Beatles’ 1963 debut "Please Please Me" through the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks". Alongside the big names such as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and Fleetwood Mac are lesser-known but highly influential artists including Laura Nyro, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Captain Beefheart, and The Stooges. An essay on each album accompanies reproductions of the original vinyl cover artwork, with rare variations from around the world. Also included are thought-provoking interviews with musicians who discuss the albums and artists who changed their lives. Graham Nash describes meeting The Beatles at a 1959 talent show where they were billed as Johnny and the Moondogs, and how, four years later, John Lennon and Paul McCartney sang him the just written "Misery" - one voice in each ear. David Bowie speaks eloquently about the Velvet Underground’s influence, and Iggy Pop writes of the profound impact upon hearing Van Morrison’s no-holds-barred performance on the first album by Them, and his admiration for Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention’s "Freak Out", noting that opening for the Mothers "pushed me to be weirder faster". Additional contributions are from Jac Holzman (Elektra Records), Robyn Hitchcock, Nels Cline (Wilco), Susanne Vega, Jon Savage, Devendra Banhart, Mick Haggerty, Joe Boyd, Peter Buck (REM), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), and Ken Barnes. Also featured are pictorial explorations of Jimi Hendrix’s personal record collection and a survey of censored album covers from throughout the rock era". A brand new, pristine copy of the 2016 first paperbound printing of one of our favorite books of the past decade BOLDLY SIGNED "Jeff Gold" in black marker on the title page.

I SCARE MYSELF: A MEMOIR BY DAN HICKS - SIGNED BY EDITOR KRISTINE McKENNA
Hicks, Dan. Edited by Kristine McKenna. Afterword by Tommy LiPuma. Foreword by Elvis Costello.. London, UK: Jawbone Press, 2017. First Edition. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Music Monograph. New/No Jacket - As Issued. 240pp, 100 b&w and color illustrations.
Please join us on Sunday, June 18th (4:00 - 6:00 PM) for a Book Signing and Panel moderated by Kristine McKenna with Van Dyke Parks, Maria Muldaur, Jim Kweskin, and Hot Licks guitarist Paul Robinson!
This vivid memoir of a man described as “one of America’s greatest songwriters” by Elvis Costello, and a cat that was “fly, sly, wily, and dry” by Tom Waits. Dan Hicks had a front-row seat to the birth and death of counter culture -- San Francisco, 1966 -- it would affect both him and his music.
"I Scare Myself" captures the highs and lows of a lifelong adventure in music. You’ll get to see Hicks’ memories of one of the changes the sixties brought, working with great musicians, plus, a foreword by Elvis Costello, afterword by producer Tommy LiPuma, and annotations by his close friend Kristine McKenna.
“I just started taking ingredients I liked and putting them together to see what came out,” Hicks writes. What came out was an amazing blend of complex time signatures, unusual instrumentation, and intricate vocal harmonies that took him to the top of the 70s rock world but also into a downward spiral of drink and drug abuse.
Hicks passed away in early 2016, but his music, and the stories he tells here, remain as fresh and irresistible as ever. I Scare Myself takes readers on a journey behind the music, and into the life and mind of the fantastic artist who created it.
PLEASE NOTE: Books will be signed by Ms. McKenna on June 18th, and posted starting Tuesday, June 20th.
