HOUSE OF COATES - SIGNED BY ALEC SOTH
(SOTH, ALEC). Zellar, Brad & Alec Soth (as Lester B. Morrison). St. Paul, MN: Little Brown Mushroom, 2012. First Edition 1/1000. 8vo. Spiral Bound Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (118pp), profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Hans Seeger. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "In House of Coates, writer Brad Zellar pieces together the story of legendary recluse Lester B. Morrison. Working from a handful of encounters and contradictory conversations, a sketchy paper trail and often confounding interviews with individuals who may or may not have been "associates" of Morrison (including Morrison's former collaborator Alec Soth), Zellar attempts to reconstruct one episode from Morrison's decidedly episodic life. In the winter of 2011, Zellar finally crossed paths with his evasive subject, and was with Morrison's permission granted access to the results of a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test that Morrison submitted to in August of 2009, along with the administrating psychiatrist's copious notes. Finally, in late December of last year, Zellar received in the mail a duct-taped shoebox marked "PERISHABLE" containing almost two hundred photographs that Morrison termed "disposable documents of the approximate period in question". From these raw materials designer Hans Seeger has assembled a book that Morrison himself has pronounced, "probably close enough to what might or might not have happened, and that’'s as much as I've learned to expect from the so-called real world". A brand new, most handsome example of the 2012 first Little Brown Mushroom edition of this quirky document (cited on page 260 of Fred Ritchin and Carole Naggar's "Magnum Photobook: A Catalogue Raisonné") in green spiral binding limited to one thousand unnumbered copies additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Alec Soth" in black ink on the title page. 0-9839990-1-5 Inventory Number: 024714

Fair/No Jacket - As Issued. np, 24 illustrations in monochrome photogravure. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the beautifully printed 1922 collection of Ralph Steiner's views of the Dartmouth campus and nearby Hanover taken while he was a member of the College Camera Club. Each of these lovely images is printed in gravure on the recto only from photo-etched plates. A serviceable copy whose front and rear boards show light wear and soiling, with abrading to the tips. Internally, both hinges have cracks, and there is a previous owner's name in ink on the inside front cover. HARVEY STEIN: THEN AND THERE - MARDI GRAS 1979 (SIGNED)
(STEIN, HARVEY). Zatara Press, I00201226, 2020. 7 x 9 in., 88 pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
In Then and There, the well-known photographer Harvey Stein documents a crucial aspect of public behavior at the 1979 New Orleans Mardi Gras. Shooting with an instant SX-70 Polaroid camera, the process allowed Stein to directly interact with his subjects, who perform, observe, and even share in the photographic process. The 47 portraits are made just feet away from each person, mostly at dusk, sharply revealed by the light of the camera’s flash bar. His subjects creatively present themselves in diverse colorful masks, makeup, and revelry. Each portrait is a glimpse into a layered and hidden personal identity made possible by the collaborative choices of the photographer and the subjects acting in front of the camera. The raw excitement of Mardi Gras flows through each portrait with the people physically filling the entire frame of the Polaroid as if the print itself were a stage just for them. Mardi Gras allows both the subject and the photographer a moment of freedom to observe a transformation into another reality of being. Stein investigates these many themes throughout the book, and captures those flamboyant moments of lightning in a bottle with each Polaroid. 9781733840613 Inventory Number: I00201226 -

MARK STEINMETZ: FIFTEEN MILES TO K-VILLE - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(STEINMETZ, MARK). Steinmetz, Mark. London, UK: Stanley / Barker, 2016. First Edition 1/750. Oblong 4to. Wrappers in Pictorial Jacket. Photography Monograph. Fine./Fine.. 100pp, 26 duotone illustrations. "Mark Steinmetz' "15 Miles to K-Ville" is a poetic journey around the outskirts of K-Ville: a fictional town somewhere between Knoxville, Tennessee and Athens, Georgia, where graves dot the terrain and a sense of forbidding hangs heavy in the air. This collection of darkly humorous and melancholy portraits and landscapes date from the early 1990s when the American photographer was moving between these two cities. "I love the South for its warmth and chaos. The vegetation down here grows rampant; the light is softened by humid air. The people are for the most part friendly and they are comfortable in their bodies. They tend to be more open to being photographed by a stranger. The unexpected happens here a lot." MARK STEINMETZ: ATL
(STEINMETZ, MARK). Steinmetz, Mark & Gregory J. Harris. Paso Robles, CA: Nazraeli Press, I00240427. 2024. First Edition 1/1000 Copies. 12 x 10 1/4", Quarto. Cloth with Pictorial Pastedown. Photography Monograph. New/No Jacket - As Issued. 80pp, 63 duotone illustrations + front cover. "American photographer Mark Steinmetz photographed the people and environs of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport between 2012 and 2019 as part of the High Museum of Art’s "Picturing the South" series, a photographic archive that examines a range of themes specific to the American South. The sixty-four duotone images in "ATL" - the fifteenth volume of Steinmetz’s work published by Nazraeli Press - emphasize “the quiet transitional moments in this liminal world,” writes curator Gregory J. Harris in the volume’s introduction. Steinmetz captures “the more introspective moments” of travel in and out of the world’s most heavily trafficked airport and includes travelers of all ages “leaving one chapter of their lives and going to another,” as the artist stated in a 2019 interview at the museum. Airline pilots, ground personnel, flight attendants, and janitors are also pictured, always working, often waiting; they share a space with the travelers but remain apart. Steinmetz also turns his focus to the open spaces around the airport, presenting vast, overgrown, and often unpeopled areas that provide a sharp contrast to the busy workings of the airport and its constantly changing population. A selection of images taken from aircraft windows depict the graphic beauty of clouds, light streaks, and jet trails, echoing the “sense of levity and mystery” felt by those traveling, as well as those viewing the photographs. Though taken over a period of years, this collection of images evokes the distinct timelessness of air travel, “capturing ordinary yet captivating human dramas that play out in the public spaces across the airport.” A brand new, most handsome example of this thought-provoking Nazraeli Press offering limited to one thousand copies still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. 978-1-59005-567-0 Inventory Number: I00240427

THE AGE OF ADOLESCENCE: JOSEPH STERLING PHOTOGRAPHS 1959-1964 - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 136pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Dmitri Levas. "From 1959 to 1964 Joseph Sterling photographed teenagers - mostly in and around Chicago - hanging out after school, at drive-ins, in fast cars. As Sterling himself defined it, "the world of the adolescent is totally interlaced within itself and incapable of freeing itself . . . It whirls, rolls, and engulfs what it is allowed to engulf." During that bridging period between postwar peace and prewar upheaval, Sterling was a student himself at Moholy-Nagy's Institute of Design in Chicago, where he studied photography under Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, and Frederick Sommer with classmates Yasuhiro Ishimoto and Ray Metzker. Along with an essay by David Travis, Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago since 1972, "The Age of Adolescence" collects more than one hundred images of a time that's both historically important and emotionally resonant, one in which, as Sterling says, "opportunity is revealed and must be exploited". A brand new, most handsome example additionally SIGNED AND DATED "Joseph Sterling / 12-1-05" in the year of publication black ink on the half title page. 0-9727788-5-3 Inventory Number: 025456

As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 156pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Ed Templeton. "Wayward Cognitions" is a collection of photographs by Ed Templeton chosen from his archives spanning twenty years. Templeton selected for this volume photographs that do not fit into his usual manner of organizing by theme or subject. In past publications he has arranged his work in straightforward groupings such as Teenage Kissers, Teenage Smokers, or photographs shot from a moving. Wayward Cognitions represents the in-between moments that arise when shooting in the streets without theme or subject. "It's about looking, people watching, finding pleasure in the visual vignettes we glimpse each day," says Templeton. When those moments are removed from the context in which they were shot, dynamic stories can be told or imagined in book form. The photographs here were printed by Templeton in his darkroom; he then created the layout and design himself, building the book from scratch in his home studio". Encompassing photography, installation, print media, video and more, this publication is the most comprehensive account of Tillmans’ wide-ranging career to date
A visionary creator and intrepid polymath, Wolfgang Tillmans unites formal inventiveness with an ethical orientation that attends to the most pressing issues of life today. While his work transcends the bounds of any single artistic discipline, he is best known for his wide-ranging photographic output. From trenchant documents of social movements to windowsill still lifes, ecstatic images of nightlife to cameraless abstractions, sensitive portraits to architectural studies, astronomical phenomena to intimate nudes, he has explored seemingly every genre of photography imaginable, continually experimenting with how to make new pictures and deepen the viewer’s experience.
Published in conjunction with a major exhibition of Tillmans’ work at the Museum of Modern Art, this copiously illustrated volume surveys four decades of the artist’s career. An outstanding group of writers offer diverse essays addressing key threads of his multifaceted practice, and a new text by Tillmans himself elucidates the distinctive methodology behind his system of presenting photographs. Wolfgang Tillmans: To look without fear grants readers new insight into the work of an artist who has not only changed the way photography is exhibited but pointed contemporary art in dynamic new directions. 9781633451117 Inventory Number: I00220827 -
