TODD HIDO: HOUSE HUNTING (REMASTERED)
(HIDO, TODD). Hido, Todd & A.M. Homes. Paso Robles, CA: Nazraeli Press, 2019. First Edition Thus 1 /4000. Small Folio. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. As New/As New.
“Todd Hido’s large color photographs of suburbia are lonely, forlorn, mysterious… and strangely comforting. Hido photographs the interior rooms of repossessed tract homes, and the outsides of similar houses at night whose habitation is suggested by the glow of a television set or unseen overhead bulb. Seldom does the similar evoke such melancholy. Yet rather than passing judgment on his anonymous subjects, Hido manages to turn the banal into something beautiful, imbuing his prints of interiors with soft pastels, and allowing the exteriors to glow in the cool evening air.” — From Nazraeli's description of the first printing of House Hunting, announced in 2000. We are excited to announce a newly remastered edition of Todd Hido’s iconic and highly sought-after first monograph, House Hunting. To celebrate the upcoming 20th anniversary of this important book – certainly one of the most influential and oft-cited photography monographs of our time – Nazraeli has collaborated closely with the artist to achieve a new impression of the highest possible fidelity. Printed on heavy weight matte art paper, using cutting-edge technologies in both the pre-press and production phases, this new edition of House Hunting stays true to the original design and format while delivering even more accurate color rendition and nuances in tone and saturation. It will be a welcome addition to collections lacking access to the very scarce original printings; and to those fortunate enough to own a copy of the original edition, it further illuminates the images themselves that first catapulted the artist and his first monograph to fame. Todd Hido’s photographs have been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, and most recently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, Switzerland. Other major institutions that have exhibited Hido’s work include the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Miami Art Museum, Florida; Netherland Architecture Institute, Rotterdam; Palazzo Ducale, Genova, Italy; Samsung Museum of Modern Art in Korea; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work was recently on view in the 49th edition of Les Recontres d’Arles, France. Work by Hido is held in public and private collections including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Smithsonian; and Fotomuseum Winterthur." A brand new, most handsome example of the 2019 "Remastered" edition of Todd Hido's long unavailable classic "House "Hunting."

TODD HIDO: BRIGHT BLACK WORLD - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(HIDO, TODD). Hido, Todd & Howard Nemerov. Paso Robles, CA: Nazraeli Press, 2018. First Edition 1/3000. Oblong Small Folio. Pictorial Cloth. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 104pp, 48 color illustrations. Designed by Bob Awfuldish and Todd Hido. "For over two decades, Todd Hido has crafted narratives through loose and mysterious suburban scenes, desolate landscapes, and stylized portraits. He has traversed North America capturing places that feel at once familiar and unknown; welcoming and unsettling. Underscoring the influences of Nordic mythology and specifically the idea of Fimbulwinter, which translates into the ‘endless winter’, Hido’s new monograph, "Bright Black World" alludes to and provides form for this notion of an apocalyptic, never-ending winter. Exploring the dark terrain of the Northern European landscape and regions as far as the North Sea of Japan enchanted Hido, calling him back on several occasions. This presents the artist’s first significant foray extensively photographing territory outside of the United States, chronicling a decidedly new psychological geography. Opening with a text by Alexander Nemerov, "Bright Black World" contains forty-eight plates printed in an oversized format, featuring two vertical gatefolds and a fold-out poster measuring some 25 by 40 inches. A brand new, pristine example of the already unavailable first printing limited to three thousand clothbound copies additionally BOLDLY SIGNED" Todd Hido" in ink on the title page. 1-59005-475-X Inventory Number: E000THBBW - 1

Hugh Holland: “That shot was one of several I did on the street, at Balboa Island, in the summer of 1975, just as I was beginning the Skate series. I was shooting some kids that were hot-dogging on the street on the sidelines of a small skate contest. I had no idea who they were. A few years later, someone saw them and asked if I knew who that kid was. I said no. He said it was Danny Kwock, who went on in the eighties to be a top surfer in the Newport area, and surfed for Quicksilver. Now he is the president of Quicksilver entertainment. New/No Jacket - As Issued. 286pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Ella Gold and Jesse Pollock. "Legendary skateboarder and artist Jerry Hsu started his blog "Nazi Gold" in 2009 as a repository for the cell phone photos he’d been collecting alongside his more traditional photography and film practices: shots of friends and strangers, roadside curiosities, and anything else that seemed to merit instant sharing with both peers and the public. In the ensuing years, the site grew from an exercise in visual note-taking into a uniquely hysterical embodiment of both Hsu’s keen artistic sense and his razor-sharp wit. Documenting his journeys through the high and low trappings of our culture, Hsu’s work captures everything from bootleg t-shirts and bathroom stall graffiti to unexpected truths and the occasional startling moment of humanity. An unerringly creative and endlessly clever chronicle of the deep ironies of our modern world, "The Beautiful Flower Is the World" collects the best of Hsu’s blog photography into a compelling and immersive whole." Shaniqwa Jarvis: Everywhere You Go There You Are
(JARVIS, SHANIQWA). Los Angeles, 2023: Shaniqwa Jarvis in collaboration with Control Gallery, I00230729. . Limited Edition of 300 copies. 8 1/2 x 9 inches. Paperback. New.
"Jarvis embarks on a quest to reconnect with a sense of place and redefine the concept of home through her compelling visual art. Delving into the interplay of solitude, nostalgia, and self-connection, Everywhere You Go, There You Are shines a light on an often overlooked aspect of Jarvis’ evolving career. This new body of work diverges from the emotional portraiture she is renowned for, encompassing medium and large format photographs —significantly marking her expansion into painted textiles and collages, which are a nod to the innocence of youth. Through these mediums, Jarvis explores the essence of childlike wonder and creativity, adding depth and layers to her story of place and identity.
'I am making images that people may not want to see from me, which I often see as part of my own identity politics. When I step back and look at what my memory allowed me to forget, I see that no matter where you go, there you are. These beautiful yet banal moments serve as reminders to pay attention, to be present, and to create deliberately.' shares Shaniqwa Jarvis." - Control Gallery

"Shaniqwa Jarvis' work is known for blending the aesthetics of modern fashion photography with the sensitive, unfiltered emotion of art portraiture. In this, her impressive first book, Ms. Jarvis presents a selection of her favorite images drawn from two decades that includes editorial work for clients like The Gap, The New York Times, Supreme, Billboard, and Riposte, "Bathroom Portraits" - shot in the toilets of bars in the early 2000s, and portraits of the likes of SZA, Lee Scratch Perry, George Condo, Cardi B, and a few requisite selfies. In some of her best-loved imagery she captures vivid reality across a wide variety of subjects that always appear to be an extension of herself. With an introduction by photographer Ryan McGinley, these images speak to raw, disparate feelings imbued with a deep sparkling optimism taken from a vantage point that is female, black, tirelessly hardworking, and brimming with raucous, positive vibrations." VENICE SPACEWALK: THE SPACETIME PHOTOGRAPHY OF JAY MARK JOHNSON: VOLUME ONE - LIMITED SLIPCASED EDITION SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(JOHNSON, JAY MARK). Finch, Christopher, Shana Nys Dambrot & Jay Mark Johnson. Venice, CA: Venice Family Clinic & Jay Mark Johnson, 2010. First Edition. Oblong Narrow 4to. Linen Boards in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Hsuan-ying Chou and Jay Mark Johnson with Lorraine Wild and Victor Hu, Green Dragon Office. This lavishly produced volume is the first monograph on the space-time photography of Jay Mark Johnson. "Coming across Jay Mark Johnson's photographs for the first time, a viewer may well be reminded of the photo finish images used to determine winners at track meets, horse races, and other sporting events. In Johnson's work, as in photo finish imagery, people, animals and moving objects are frozen against a background that has been dissolved by the camera into horizontal bands of color stretching from edge to edge of the picture plane. This similarity is no accident, since both Johnson and the photo finish cameraman employ the same technology - slit-scan photography. As utilized by both, slit-scan is used to capture movement as it unfolds in time. In emulsion-based photography, the technology involves an actual slit moving continuously past the film, exposing a sliver at a time to create an image that "freezes" motion. With the highly sophisticated digital camera that Johnson employs, the same effect is achieved with a "virtual" electronic slit, a single pixel in breadth that scans the subject (which, like a race, is in fact an "event"). In either case, all of the movement that occurs in front of the lens is synthesized into a single image. The resulting photographs capture, in a graphic way, the event that takes place during that period, so that in Johnson's pictures a person may appear more than once in the same image (having overtaken the tracking movement of the slit), and objects become subject to an exaggerated form of the photographic phenomenon known as "focal-plane shutter distortion". A brand new, pristine example of the limited slipcased edition of this amazing book of color time and motion studies taken in and around Venice California additionally BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED "Jay Mark Johnson 2014" in black ink on the title page still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. AMERICAN PITBULL: PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARC JOSEPH
(JOSEPH, MARC). Joseph, Marc & James Frey. Interviews by Cory Reynolds. Carol LeFlufy, Editor. Gottingen, GERMANY: Steidl, 2003. First Edition. 4to. Boards with Pastedown. Photography Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 248pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Gerhard Steidl, Marc Joseph and Claas Moller. Text in English. "American Pitbull" is a photographic exploration into the culture of American Pit Bull dogs and their people, presenting an alternative view of the controversial world revolving around a uniquely American breed of dog and the human beings that live for them. Over a three-year period photographer Marc Joseph traveled the United States photographing Pit Bull dogs, their owners, breeders and "old time dog men," at their homes and yards, and during various events related to the breed. The relationships formed with his subjects have helped Joseph to gain full access to a culture known by few outside of their specific community. The fanatical, almost religious devotion that Pit Bull people attribute to their breed is clearly portrayed in Joseph's pictures. Issues of identity are addressed through elements of image, race, pride, and background, while the photographs simultaneously serve to further an understanding of our perceptions of unconditional love, beauty, danger, and strength. Themes of family and shelter are prominent; throughout the series a cast of characters emerges, themselves defining the context of the book. From the elder-statesmen of the Pit Bull world in New England and the Southern United States such as Louis B. Colby and Floyd Boudreaux, to new-school giants the Hip-Hop music scene on the East and West coasts, such as Big Boi from Outkast, and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, "American Pitbull" clearly goes to the heart of what and why people feel so strongly for these dogs. Writer James Frey ("A Million Little Pieces") contributes an historically informative and personally sensitive essay, that, along with Marc Joseph's photographs, may well change a few minds on this, most misunderstood of all of man's best friends". A stunning tour-de-force, this is without a doubt one of our favorite photo-essays in recent years! A most handsome example of the ultra-scarce brown buckram variant cover of the hardbound 2003 Steidl first edition still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. 3-88243-914-9 Inventory Number: 020830

RON JUDE: ALPINE STAR - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(JUDE, RON). Jude, Ron. Rochester, NY: A-Jump Books, 2006. First Edition 1/500. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Fine.. np (96pp), 49 black & white illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "The source of the photographs in "Alpine Star" is the weekly newspaper from Ron Jude's hometown of McCall in Central Idaho. The poetic element of these images - that unnamed, abstract subtext found in every photograph - is inflated here through the process of subtle manipulation and nuanced sequencing. While offering a world of loss and isolation, the pictures also suggest the cross-pollination of personal history and collective memory". A bright, most handsome example from the unnumbered first edition of five hundred copies of the photographer's first book additionally SIGNED AND DATED "Ron Jude 2007" in black ink on the rear colophon. 0-9777655-0-4 Inventory Number: 023101

RON JUDE: LICK CREEK LINE - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
(JUDE, RON). Jude, Ron & Nicholas Muellner. London: MACK, 2012. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Self-Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Fine.. np (112pp) + np (8pp), 69 color illustrations. "Ron Jude’s "Lick Creek Line" extends and amplifies his ongoing fascination with the vagaries of photographic empiricism, and the gray area between documentation and fiction. In a sequential narrative punctuated by contrasting moments of violence and beauty, Jude follows the rambling journey of a fur trapper, methodically checking his trap line in a remote area of Idaho in the Western United States. Through converging pictures of landscapes, architecture, an encroaching resort community, and the solitary, secretive process of trapping pine marten for their pelts, "Lick Creek Line" underscores the murky and culturally arbitrary nature of moral critique". A brand new, bright white, most handsome example additionally SIGNED "Ron Jude" in black ink on the title page with the publisher's eight page staple-bound newsprint booklet laid in, as issued. 1-907946-17-9 Inventory Number: 027650
