This seventh installment of "Semina" - Wallace Berman's legendary, and legendarily scarce handmade literary and art periodical - is subtitled "Aleph". Published in Larkspur in 1961, unlike its predecessors that anthologized work from the movers and shakers of the West Coast Beat scene, this number is entirely devoted entirely to contributions by Berman himself. It is comprised of eighteen loose reproductions of photographs, drawings, and text - many of which combine these elements. A complete, internally handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item limited to two hundred unnumbered copies. The eleven photographic reproductions on cardstock are bright and fresh, while several of the text pieces printed on matte paper show typical minor soiling, offsetting, and age-toning. The printed white pocket into which these are gathered is still securely affixed to the inside rear cover. Externally, the title pastedown on the front cover shows some mild rubbing and foxing, and the brittle, highly acidic chipboard covers have light overall wear, age-toning, and soiling. More notably, the covers have separated cleanly along the length of the spine, and there are two triangular chips of paper loss along the bottom edge - one on the rear at the heel of the spine, and a tiny one at the foredge front corner. Both detached fragments are present, and we have decided to let the next owner deal with their preferences for any paper restoration. All in all, this is a most presentable copy of a truly remarkable Wallace Berman item that looks far nicer in hand than it describes that has been priced accordingly. Inventory Number: 026125

"Ballet" is renowned late graphic designer Alexey Brodovitch's iconic 1945 book of photographic vignettes capturing eleven performances by The Ballets Russes between 1935 and 1937. Noted for the innovative-at-the-time use of murky shadows and blurred dancers bathed in light, these arresting images of the likes of principals Leonide Massine, Tamara Toumanova, Irina Baronova, and more are accompanied by New York poet and dance critic Edwin Denby's brief but cogent text. An internally bright, handsome example of the first and only edition of this uncommon classic (cited on pages 240-241 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I, pages 136-137 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book: A History of the Photographic Book from 1878 to the Present", and pages 110-113 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing a bit of typical light age-toning to the pages, a slight dent through the lower foredge corner, wear to the top of the spine, and a previous owner's name in ink on the front pastedown. It's highly sulfurous chipboard covers are lightly browned, spotted, and a bit worn. The book's striking, notoriously fragile original paper dust jacket designed by Brodovitch is lacking, but has been replaced with a facsimile jacket meticulously executed by Woonsocket, Rhode Island's esteemed Dragonfly Bindery. It is housed in the Bindery's lavish custom brown cloth-over-boards clamshell presentation box with pastedowns reproducing the "Ballet" logo on the front cover and spine. All in all, this is a sharp, internally solid copy of one of the most lauded post-war American photography books aided by the addition of its jacket and presentation box that looks far nicer in hand than it describes. The most visually spectacular of her artist's books to date, "La Fille Du Docteur" is yet another exploration of the part autobiographical, part fictional personae of Sophie Calle. The work consists of sixteen facsimile cards of congratulation (purportedly) from colleagues of the artist's father upon the announcement of her birth. This was traditional amongst the French medical profession, and Calle's father was a physician. Or was he? Each of these cards is housed in a glassine envelope that faces a sequential photographic image printed on vellum of the artist performing a drunken striptease. These images conclude with the naked, comatose Sophie (who "will be a source of joy to her parents") sprawled in a heap. The book is bound as a faux leopard-skin album, which is in turn housed in a paper covered, chipboard box with a printed label. "Scribble Book" is a self-portrait that emerges step-by-step out of the printing process, one plate and one color at a time. In 1964, Duhamel privately self-published this facsimile in an edition limited to eight hundred and fifty total copies - including one hundred deluxe examples accompanied by an original etching. The 5 ¼ x 4 1/8" sketchbook in decorative cloth contains over one hundred playful, calligraphic renderings from the hand of the master in grey gouache. It is accompanied by a leporello booklet - half issued with English text, half with French - with Duhamel's jaunty assessments of the imagery and reminiscences of his friendship with the artist along with the publication details. The two are presented in a heavy paper envelope reproducing in facsimile Picasso's colorful holographic 1957 gift presentation to Duhamel. In it, the iconoclastic late Los Angeles-based artist definies a number of terms incorporating the word "version" - from "aversion" to "universion" - before elaborating upon the piece's references, background, and sculptural components. It is an intensely smart publication that reveals the work's inspiration in both Pasadena's notorious rocket propulsion pioneer-turned-Majick acolyte Jack Whiteside Parsons and the artistic practice of Franz West! As a bonus, it also reproduces Rhoades' astrological natal chart. Warhol was in Arizona as part of a college lecture tour two months prior to shooting what turned out to be his final independent film "Lonesome Cowboys" - which featured Factory Superstars Joe Dallesandro, Viva, Eric Emerson, Taylor Mead, Louis Waldon, and Tom Hompertz, To defray costs of the trip, the always-thrifty artist scheduled a paid college Film Department appearance at nearby Arizona State University. When a similar booking did not materialize at The University of Arizona, Warhol was contacted by Tucson's Cinema I Film Society at the JCC, and an event was hastily set up. To publicize the appearance, two different posters using Warhol's portrait were quickly pasted up, printed, and posted by the Film Society members around town.
