JOSEP RENAU: FOTOMONTADOR

Published as part of Fondo De Cultura Economica's notable Pablo Ortiz Monasterio curated photography series "Coleccion Rio De Luz", this is a lovely monograph devoted entirely to the satirical political photomontages of Spaniard Josep Renau. A brand new, most handsome example of this uncommon gem (cited on page 116 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II" and page 19 of Horacio Fernandez' "The Latin American Photobook" - even though Renau was an artist and not a photographer!). From 2012 to 2014, Soth traveled state by state while working on his self-published newspaper, "The LBM Dispatch", as well as on assignment for the "New York Times" and others. From upstate New York to Silicon Valley, Soth attended hundreds of meetings, dances, festivals and communal gatherings in search of human interaction in an era of virtual social networks. With "Songbook", Soth has stripped these pictures of their news context in order to highlight the longing for connection at their root. Fragmentary, funny and sad, "Songbook" is a lyrical depiction of the tension between American individualism and the desire to be united". A brand new, pristine example of the 2015 first MACK printing of this awesome undertaking (cited on page 260 of Fred Ritchin and Carole Naggar's "Magnum Photobook: A Catalogue Raisonné") additionally BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED "Alec Soth 2015" in the year of publication in black ink on the title page. As New./No Jackets - As Issued.. np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Lewis Chaplin. "Alec Soth's reputation as one of the leading lights of contemporary photographic practice is largely predicated on the books he has published. This unusual catalogue accompanies a 2015 touring exhibition which uses the four major bodies of work which Soth has published as books since 2004 as the structural basis for both a mid-career retrospective and an investigation of Soth's prescient understanding of the various and distinct applications of photography as a tool for storytelling across diverse media. The title of the exhibition comes from Walt Whitman's poem 1855 "Song of Myself" and references both the pages of his books gathered for consideration, and the notion that his work is also a story about Soth himself. This catalogue is a special object, bringing together an essay by Aaron Schuman spread across twenty-nine large format postcards, an additional card printed with an introduction by Kate Bush - curator of the exhibition and the director of Media Space, London, with mini facsimile versions of Soth's "Sleeping by the Mississippi", "Niagara", "Broken Manual", and "Songbook". HOUSE OF COATES - SIGNED BY ALEC SOTH
(SOTH, ALEC). Zellar, Brad & Alec Soth (as Lester B. Morrison). St. Paul, MN: Little Brown Mushroom, 2012. First Edition 1/1000. 8vo. Spiral Bound Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (118pp), profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Hans Seeger. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "In House of Coates, writer Brad Zellar pieces together the story of legendary recluse Lester B. Morrison. Working from a handful of encounters and contradictory conversations, a sketchy paper trail and often confounding interviews with individuals who may or may not have been "associates" of Morrison (including Morrison's former collaborator Alec Soth), Zellar attempts to reconstruct one episode from Morrison's decidedly episodic life. In the winter of 2011, Zellar finally crossed paths with his evasive subject, and was with Morrison's permission granted access to the results of a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test that Morrison submitted to in August of 2009, along with the administrating psychiatrist's copious notes. Finally, in late December of last year, Zellar received in the mail a duct-taped shoebox marked "PERISHABLE" containing almost two hundred photographs that Morrison termed "disposable documents of the approximate period in question". From these raw materials designer Hans Seeger has assembled a book that Morrison himself has pronounced, "probably close enough to what might or might not have happened, and that’'s as much as I've learned to expect from the so-called real world". A brand new, most handsome example of the 2012 first Little Brown Mushroom edition of this quirky document (cited on page 260 of Fred Ritchin and Carole Naggar's "Magnum Photobook: A Catalogue Raisonné") in green spiral binding limited to one thousand unnumbered copies additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Alec Soth" in black ink on the title page. 0-9839990-1-5 Inventory Number: 024714

That Tmej, and these pictures survived to produce this moving book at the war's end is remarkable. An internally most presentable example of the first and only edition of this uncommon classic (cited on pages 198-199 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I, pages 144-145 of The Hassleblad Center's "The Open Book: A History of the Photographic Book from 1878 to the Present", and pages 124-125 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing typical pronounced age-toning to the highly sulfurous textblock and stiff paper covers along with some attendant brown spotting to the first and last few pages. The book's fragile, photographically-illustrated jacket is present, though it has been heavily reinforced with clear tape on the verso. It is worn and creased with some closed tears and small missing chips along the top and bottom edges. In addition, there is some browning and spotting to the typographically-illustrated rear panel, and a three inch strip of the spine is missing. It is housed in a sumptuous custom black, decoratively-tooled goatskin-over-boards clamshell presentation box with four raised bands along with the author's name and book title in gilt along the spine. All in all, this is a sharp, internally solid copy of one of the most lauded post-war European photography books aided by the addition of a presentation box that looks far nicer in hand than it describes. WHY MISTER, WHY? GEERT VAN KESTEREN, IRAQ 2003-2004
(VAN KESTEREN, GEERT). van Kesteren, Geert & Michael Hirsh. Foreword by Jan Gruiters. Amsterdam, THE NETHERLANDS: Artimo, 2004. First Edition. 8vo. Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Fine.. np (544pp), 245 color illustrations. Text in English and Arabic. "Why Mister, Why?" is a compelling account from Dutch photojournalist Geert van Kesteren. For the most part of 2003 and into 2004, van Kesteren made these images in a struggling Iraq, intertwining them with his personal experience of the situation in diary-like notes. In that way, this body of work resonates with an honesty found only when the narrator and photographer of a story are one and the same. The situation in Iraq, following the declaration of "mission accomplished," represented a culture clash of rare proportions, and van Kesteren was witness to what went wrong. He saw clouds of sadness coming from the mass graves created by the Saddam regime, while Shi'ites enjoyed their awakening freedom. Embedded within the ranks of US troops, he witnessed disgraceful raids on Iraqi citizens. And these accounts are presented here for the reader to see, feel, and try to understand. In a clear photojournalistic way, van Kesteren outlines why it will take a long time before the Iraqi people can enjoy the semblance of peace. Accompanying the images is an introduction by Newsweek senior editor Michael Hirsh, with whom Van Kesteren shared several tense moments in Iraq". A pristine copy (cited on page 241 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II" and page 45 of "From Fair to Fine 3") of the English and Arabic language edition of this eccentrically bound gem. 90-8546-009-3 Inventory Number: 015220

Heiting, Manfred & Mikhail Karasik. Gottingen, GERMANY: Steidl, 2015. First Edition. Stout Square 4to. Illustrated Boards. Photographic Survey. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 978-3958290310
The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941
A massive, full-illustrated history of photography book making and design from the USSR
Published by Steidl
Edited by Mikhail Karasik, Manfred HeitingThe Soviet Union was unique in its dynamic use of the illustrated book as a means of propaganda. Through the form of the book, the USSR articulated its utopian (and eventually totalitarian) ideologies and expressed its absolute power through avant-garde writing and radical graphic design that was in full flower during the 1920s and 1930s.
No other country or political system advanced its cause by attracting and employing acclaimed members of the avant-garde. Among them were writers such as Semion Kirsanov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Ilya Selvinsky, Sergei Tretyakov and Kornely Zelinsky; artist designers such as Gustav Klutsis, Valentina Kulagina, El Lissitzky, Sergei Senkin, Varvara Stepanova, Solomon Telingater and Nikolai Troshin; and photographers such as Dmitry Debabov, Vladimir Griuntal, Boris Ignatovich, Alexander Khlebnikov, Yeleazar Langman, Alexander Rodchenko and Georgy Petrusov, not to mention many of the best printing plants and bookbinders.
Gorgeously produced, edited and designed, The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941 presents 160 of the most stunning and elaborately produced photobooks from this period and includes more than 400 additional reference illustrations. The book also provides short biographies of the photobook contributors, some of whom are presented for the first time.Inventory Number: E000SOVIET
