Contrasting decaying blocks of flats with under-construction skyscrapers, "Neon Tigers" bears more than a passing resemblance to the urban dystopia of "Blade Runner" - especially in its sodium light drenched night skylines. This is a group of three unique, lavishly hand-assembled 14 x 12 ½" project documentation books produced in 1930 by Pruitt & Brown Architects to showcase their design work for recently opened showpieces for the Childs Restaurant chain. Founded in New York in the 1880s, Childs became one of the first national dining chains, with over one hundred venues at its height. The firm's ownership changed hands just as the US slipped into the Great Depression, and Childs optimistically opened a series of elegant Manhattan dining establishments each differentiated by a distinct architectural theme presented as if one were stepping onto a glamorous Hollywood back lot set. These hefty volumes have been produced in the manner of a scrapbook with original sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs by the Peyser & Patzig firm affixed to thick linen-hinged pages throughout liberally supplemented by menus, correspondence, and newspaper, magazine, and press coverage of the projects. The first is devoted to the Childs Restaurant at 425 Lexington Avenue which was a jaw-dropping showpiece of Art Deco elegance. The second covers Childs "Old England" at 9 East 40th Street, which presented a Robin Hood-like décor. The third - and most comprehensive of these books - details William Child's "Old Algiers" at 102nd Street and Broadway, which simulated an exotic night at the Kasbah. The three are bound in differing hues of buckram over boards with still-bright gilt-stamped titles on their front covers and spines. Each is internally in Fine condition, and bears a typed label on the inside front board noting that the volume was issued by the Pruitt & Brown Architects office at 342 Madison Avenue for use at the firm's Charlottesville, VA office. The exteriors show varying degrees of wear, rubbing, and some light discoloration, but are still sound and in no way detract from the remarkable contents. These are stunning, near-unique documents of another time, place, and dining experience that must be seen in hand to be fully appreciated. To mark the 1976 Bicentennial of the United States of America, Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Inc. commissioned twenty-four photographers to record more than one thousand County Court houses across the country using both color and black and white film. The project, directed by Phyllis Lambert and edited by Richard Pare, created the then-most comprehensive survey of an American building type. The Seagram County Court House Archives collection of photographic negatives and master prints was ultimately presented as a gift, with its copyright ownership, to the Library of Congress. In 1978 Horizon published the lovely Richard Pare-edited book of images from this undertaking entitled "Court House: A Photographic Document". This color postcard featuring Jim Dow's color image "Harlan County Court House, Harlan, Kentucky, c1918-21" was issued in conjunction with that release. Published in conjunction with a 1995 exhibition at Portikus Frankfurt am Main, this elegant, ambitiously designed, oversized publication is devoted to Andreas Gursky's monumental photograph of architect Jean Dubuisson's quarter-mile long Montparnasse housing block. A single 10 ¼ x 18 ¾" color reproduction on heavy stock is laid into a silver folder that bears the names of the more than seven hundred and fifty families inhabiting the massive housing project. This is accompanied by two booklets in silver wrappers: "Texte" - which contains an essay by Hans Irrek as well as interviews with Dubuisson and three Montparnasse dwellers, and "Images" - which reproduces grainy full page voyeuristic blown-up details of interiors of the individual apartments. These three printed components are housed in a shallow printed cardboard box. The interior contents are all in Near Fine condition with no notable flaws. The matte black paper-covered lower portion of the box along with the silver lid show some light overall wear, scuffs and minor abrasions, but no splits or tears to the corners as one typically sees. Due to its silver paper and fragile construction "Montparnasse" (cited on page 275 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") rarely turns up in beautiful condition, but this is truly a most handsome example of this uncommon item that looks far nicer in hand than it describes. 3-89611-003-9 Inventory Number: 020400
