LIMIT: ONE PER CUSTOMER, PLEASE!
Reproduction is the first monograph to collect the photographs of internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Barry McGee. Though best known for the inventive graphic sensibility of his paintings, drawings, and installations, McGee’s use of photography is an essential component of his artistic vision. Captured at all hours and around the world with whatever camera is at hand, McGee’s images are immediate, casual, intimate, and anarchic all at once. His work boldly employs geometric shapes, clusters of framed drawings and paintings, distinctive characters, and found objects such as empty bottles, surfboards, and wrecked vehicles. Whether incorporated into his iconic multi-element compositions, or printed in the innumerable fanzines and artist’s books that often accompany his exhibitions, photographs pervade McGee’s practice. Barry McGee: Reproduction provides unique insight into the process of a major American artist, and is a testament to the immense amount of visual information McGee has absorbed to build one of the most eclectic and innovative artistic legacies of our time.
For this landmark volume, artist Barry McGee has created six unique rubber stamps exclusively for publisher Aperture and each of five different retailers around the world to be applied to a limited number of copies for one week only. Arcana: Books on the Arts has been fortunate enough to be chosen to represent Los Angeles, and will have one hundred-ish copies of this unique version available for purchase first come, first served.

Celebrating Mondrian's journey from Dutch landscape painter to pioneer of lively, hard-edged abstraction
Published on the occasion of the Dutch artist’s 150th birthday, Mondrian Evolution celebrates the multifaceted work and artistic development of Piet Mondrian. The artist cemented his place in the art historical canon with his geometric compositions characterized by black lines cast against white surfaces partially filled by the primary colors blue, red and yellow. Indelible as they are, these compositions comprise only a portion of Mondrian’s expansive oeuvre. The artist moved through various formal evolutions, corresponding to his various geographical residences, before he arrived at his signature minimalist abstract style. After his classical training in figurative painting, Mondrian departed for Paris, where he immersed himself in the avant-garde currents energizing the city; Cubism, in particular, stimulated his imagination. Taking the movement as a point of departure, Mondrian developed Neo-Plasticism, a nonrepresentational “pure plastic art,” which he believed to be the pathway to universal beauty.
This monograph diligently traces the artist’s progression from landscape painter to abstractionist trailblazer—and all the stops in between. Each chapter homes in on a specific motif within Mondrian’s oeuvre, including windmills, dunes, the sea, farms reflected in the water and plants in various forms of abstraction. 9783775752374 Inventory Number: I00220813 -
KRISTEN MORGIN: PROMISE ME THE EARTH - SIGNED BY THE ARTIST WITH A SMALL DRAWING
(MORGIN, KRISTEN). Morgin, Kristen & Marc Selwyn. Beverly Hills, CA: Marc Selwyn Fine Art, 2022. First Edition. 10 x 8 1/2'. Printed Boards with Illustrated Pastedown. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 120pp, profusely illustrated in color. 978-0-578-33196-6
"Kristen Morgin lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work, which is formed with a mixture of clay, glue, cement and other media, comes from a ceramic background but goes far beyond traditional uses of the medium. Her sculptures have an affinity to the constructions of George Herms, Edward Kienholz, and Michael McMillen, but evoke relics of contemporary culture that may have been buried and unearthed at a later date. Toys, books, comics and other objects are rendered true to scale in unfired clay and recall the artist’s childhood. Corroding surfaces evoke mortality, decay and the passage of time. Eccentric narratives and playful juxtapositions come together to form new objects with unexpected connotations."
A brand new, pristine example of this newly published, elegantly designed comprehensive hardbound monograph featuring a lengthy transcribed interview with the artist by her gallerist, Marc Selwyn, that is additionally SIGNED BY THE ARTIST WITH A SMALL DRAWING AT THE REAR COLOPHON.

ROCKY MORTON: WHILE I'M AWAY - SIGNED BY THE ARTIST
(MORTON, ROCKY). Morton, Rocky, Peter Frank, Tom Knoles & Jim Czarnecki. Los Angeles: Rocky Morton, 2024, I00241030. First Edition 1/500 Copies. 13 1/2 x 10 1/2", 4to. Illustrated Boards. Artist Monograph. New./No Jacket - As Issued. 60pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "Known primarily for his work as a filmmaker, multi-disciplinary artist Rocky Morton.makes a striking return to his roots in painting with a new book and exhibition entitled "While I'm Away". Drawing from his deep fascination with science and the essence of humanity, Morton’s latest works stand apart in their inspiration and innovative creation process. Morton uses a leaf blower to propel strings of paint mixed with a unique elastic ingredient across the canvas. This technique results in delicate, thread-like patterns reminiscent of mycelium, the fungal networks that connect all living plants and trees, bringing a touch of nature’s unpredictability into his art. Art critic and curator Peter Frank states in his introduction "Morton finds beauty in division – his colored paintings thrill with outpourings of intense hues, all assigned to their own regions yet struggling to oppose and at the same time embrace, even merge with, one another”. At the heart of "While I’m Awa" is the theme of universal connection. These paintings seek to transcend the familiar, venturing into uncharted territory, where the tangible world meets the infinite. Some pieces present literal interpretations, horizons where existence seems to emerge from nothingness, while others evoke the complex interconnectedness of the universe, akin to the synapses in the brain or fields of energy reminiscent of string theory. While I’m Away will be on display at Los Angeles' Shatto Gallery from November 2nd to December 7th 2024, offering art enthusiasts a rare opportunity to experience these visionary works firsthand". A brand new, most handsome example of this lovely new publication additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Rocky Morton" in silver marker on the inside front cover. 979-8218982942 Inventory Number: I00241030

THADDEUS MOSLEY
(MOSLEY, THADDEUS) Foreword by Ingrid Schaffner. Text by Brett Littman, Jessica Bell Brown, Ed Roberson, Connie Choi. Interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist. Poetry by Sam Gilliam. KARMA, I00201022, 2020. First Edition. 7 x 9 in., 312 pages. Hardbound. New/No Jacket - As Issued.
Long needed, and already out of print, this is the first full overview of American abstract sculptor Thad Mosley
Since 1959, the monumental, freestanding sculptures of Pittsburgh-based artist Thad Mosley, crafted with reclaimed building materials and felled trees, have occupied the forefront of abstraction in American sculpture. This book surveys his career.
Using only a mallet and chisel, he reworks salvaged timber into biomorphic forms. With influences ranging from Isamu Noguchi to Constantin Brâncuși—and the Bamum, Dogon, Baoulé, Senufo, Dan, and Mossi works of his personal collection—Mosley’s sculptures mark an inflection point in the history of American abstraction. These “sculptural improvisations,” as he calls them, take cues from the modernist traditions of jazz. “The only way you can really achieve something is if you’re not working so much from a pattern,” Mosley says of his improvisational method. “That’s also the essence of good jazz.”
